setting pricing when building assemblies

Thanks for reaching out to the Community about your inventory concern, BadBrad.

I’m here to help make sure that the correct price is set for your items when building assemblies. We’ll have to use the Unit of Measure (UM) option to show what quantities, prices, rates, and costs are based on.

Before performing any steps, let me share some information about the feature. There are two ways to allocate a unit of measure in QuickBooks: Single unit or multiple units of measure.

You can use any of the methods mentioned above to track the products. Follow these steps to turn on the UM:

  1. In your company file, tap the Edit menu to choose Preferences.
  2. Navigate to the Items & Inventory menu on the left panel and select the Company Preferences tab.
  3. In the Unit of Measure section, click the Enable button to turn on the feature.

After setting it up, you can start setting a specific unit for the items. For more insights into this process, you can browse this article: Use single and multiple units of measure for items. It includes instructions on how to manage a specific unit.

I’m adding some links below to learn more about building assembly items, handling the inventory assets, and the cost of goods sold tracking.

Drop a comment below f you have any additional questions or concerns about items and retail pricing.  I'm always here to help you. Enjoy the rest of the week.

your suggestions do not work and do not address the issue. my preferences are set to:   Multiple UM per item.  i have also spent the time reading the links you sent me but none of them addressed my question.  1. My question is on setting the proper pricing.  2. all i want QB to do is when setting up "Inventory Assemblies" for QB to take the pricing i have already spent 8 months imputing into QB for my inventory items and use them for the combined Retail Sales Price for this Assembly, and not use Cost to figure the sales price.   For Manufacturing this is the total wrong way to price from cost to retail.  for Example:  Widget i use in the kit if i were to purchase in low quantity the would be $100 now if  i purchased 10,000 Widgets at a time to save money this reducing my cost to $40. many of the widgets in building this assembly is using many of different parts with different cost values.  Though my cost is dramatically reduced on some widgets to build the assembly what i sell the completed assembly for should not change using   1 Retail, 2 WD and 3 Dealer.  please help as i have so much time in setting this up.  my other option is to back to using Excel as I have every single item also priced this way in Excel.   QB should work with Excel that would be so nice!  HELP! .

Joining the thread to offer some insights about building your assemblies, @BadBrad.

Thank you for taking the time to share additional details about your initial post needing the setup of pricing before building assemblies.

In QuickBooks Desktop, building your assemblies automatically carry over the amount of cost that was entered while setting up your items. This is the reason why it'll only show up the cost amount and it is recommended to manually change the pricing of your inventory assembly.

Therefore, here's an article you can read to learn more about assembly you build: Combine your Inventory Items to Build Finished Goods.

I'm adding this article with the topics that allow you to skip manual tracking and focus on making your own products: Track the Products you Manufacture in QuickBooks Desktop Premier, Enterprise, or Accountant.

If you have any other questions aside from building an assembly, please let me know in the comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand. Take care and stay safe!

Thank you very much for your reply but why should i have to go back and add the selling price of every single item in the "inventory assembly" when the information is already in QB.   For instance if i build a group with all the same parts QB will properly display the selling price.   having someone have to manually go back to each item and write down the selling price (that is in QB) and then add them together on a calculator then go back into QB "inventory assembly" and enter the selling price because QB will not calculate the selling price based on the same information . . . . . this does not make sense  . . ..    any solution other than manually adding the saved pricing

Welcome back, @BadBrad.

At this time, you'll have to go through each item in your inventory assembly to update its selling price.

I know that this process can take time to renew the selling price of each item. As an alternative, you can consider looking for a third-party application that can help update your inventory assembly automatically. To find an app, you can go to our QuickBooks Desktop Apps store and search for a keyword.

Also, I suggest submitting feedback directly to our product engineers. They may look into this suggestion and consider adding the option in the future update. To submit feedback, please be guided with the steps below:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
  2. Go to the Help menu, then select Send Feedback Online and choose Product Suggestion.
  3. Enter your feedback and click Submit.

You might also want to run inventory reports on your QuickBooks Desktop. This way, you can review your inventory status from time to time.

Please let me know if you need clarification about building assembly. I'll be standing by for your response.

If I can add to the question. There is a fundamental difference between group and assembly.

As for group, it's like putting a bunch of items in a box, thus the selling price of the group is just the total of the items in the box at selling price.

As for assembly, it's assumed you are the one putting parts together and selling it as an item, thus you will need to know the total cost to calculate your selling price.

Haven't tried this myself, but what happens if you place a group in an assembly? You can't have groups inside groups, but you can have assemblies inside assemblies...

Thank you for taking some in posting a response in this thread, jaapkrijger.

Let me share some information about how inventory assembly and group items works in QuickBooks Desktop.

You're right. both of these feature has a fundamental difference. Creating a Group items gives you the option to show a single line item in the invoice, instead of two separate line items.

On the other hand, Assembly is the best tracking feature for manufacturers cause it allows you to create an entirely new item from parts. It's also the best way to track each components costs and quantity when building a finished goods.

That said, inventory assembly item is what a manufacturer is working with. A group item is usually used more by distributors that are putting together standard kits or boxes at the time you are shipping.
