I am trying to export my QuickBooks Online data and import this data to Quickbooks Desktop Pro and have tried for 3 days each time waiting for over 12 hours but keep on seeing the following error message upon logging back in:
"Sorry, but something went wrong on [time and date] when you requested that a company file be created for downloading. Please click Start Over to try again."
I have follow all the steps provided by Intuit help articles and try export the data on the 'app.qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdt' page once I'm logged in QBO. Here are the options I selected:
It says that exporting can take up to 12 hours, but is usually less. So I wait until the next day to log in and try to download the exported data file but I get the error message that doesn't specify exactly what the problem is and tells me to start over again.
I contacted Intuit chat for support and they told me to call XXX-XXX-XXXX for the department that specializes in data export. I call in for phone support and their automated message says the waiting time is usually 5-10 mins. I waited for 16 mins on the phone with the music playing and eventually it goes silent. I waited for another 2-3 minutes with no one picking up the line so I hung up after.
I need help with this issue. Text support is unable to help and phone support doesn't even answer the calls. Has anyone else been able to resolve this problem?
I understand this isn't an easy process for you, @patr1ckl. I'm here to ensure you'll get past this issue to move data easily.
The error message you get when exporting QuickBooks Online data is likely due to a compatibility problem. Make sure to log in to your QBO account using a supported web browser. See this link for more information about it: System requirements for QuickBooks Online, Accountant, Payroll, and QuickBooks Self-Employed.
If the issue persists, I recommend getting in touch with our Customer Support team. This allows our team to investigate further and provide you with the best resolution.
Let me also add this guide for the complete steps in transferring data.
Please know that you can get back to me anytime if you need more assistance with migrating files or if you have othe QuickBooks queries in general. I'll be pleased to provide you with additional guidance. Keep safe and have a good one!
You are using QBO US version, correct?
@Fiat Lux - ASIA yes I'm using the QBO US version. Have you experienced this problem before?
Which QB Desktop year version do you run on your machine?
I originally tried Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2023 but ran into this issue here during the installation:
Contacted the Quickbooks support team and our only solution or workaround is to install Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 for now but unable to export the QBO data to import it into QBD Pro 2021.
Make sure you are using the trial version for QBD 2021 US version. If you didn't use any code to install it, you are using QBD 2021 CA version. Last resort, purchase a 3rd party service to convert your data.
When I was on Intuit Live Chat support, the customer representative gave me a QBD Pro 2021 US link to download. I was also provided a key and product # for the install so it's not the QBD 2021 CA version.
App install was successful but now I'm trying to export the data through Safari browser first and then if that doesn't work Chrome browser.
Hello @Mich_S,
I have tried to export the data on supporting browsers (Safari and Chrome) since I was originally using the Brave browser. However, that did not resolve the problem.
I was able to get through on the phone with your customer support team and they got the data migration support staff online. I was informed that eventually, Intuit will be discontinuing QB Desktop after 2023. So I think at this stage it's not worth the time and investment to work with the data migration team to figure out what the problem is if the QB Desktop app will be discontinued.
Our main point of exporting the QBO data and importing it to QBD was to create a company file to import into TurboTax for quicker tax filing.
Thank you for following the suggested solutions, patr1ckl.
We've already provided the things that we can suggest from here. At this point, it's best to contact our phone or chat support again, so they can use more tools to check why you still can't import your data in QB Pro 2021. They're available up to 6 PM PT today.
Free free to reach back out if you have any other questions about converting your file. Take care and have a good one.

I haven't seen any announcements for QB Desktop US and CA yet. I believe they will evaluate the impact of discontinuation QB Desktop UK version in 2023 for their consideration.
I know it has been a couple months since this question was first posted, but I wanted to share a video that walks you through this process and also addresses what to do when you do not receive an email notification that your data is ready.
I hope this video helps others searching this topic!

I have the same problem as the original post and its years later and I have invested a week and a half and still no solutions after making the desktop purchase - Why isn't there better support? I have wasted so many hours and hours and hours. Do it again, I have done it 10x or more and no success.
This problem is a software issue/bug that is outside the scope and knowledge of their customer support team. The issue has to be escalated to their software development team for them to test, debug, and release a fix. It's been over a year now and I doubt their dev team will be releasing any fix for this.
Which QB Desktop year version did you use to convert data from QBO? I would say that the trial version of QB Desktop 2021 Pro is more reliable to do so.
I have the same issue. But I'm trying to run away from Intuit. I have had my fill of them never resolving issues. They just don't care.
You can convert your data to QB Desktop file format and use the trial version to access your historical data for good. Then you can start from scratch in another program to lower your conversion costs.
I cannot export the QBXML file in order to get it into desktop.
It always fails.
I even tried to do a "financial data without transactions"
This too fails.
At this point, I don't care how much it costs. I just want to get it done.
Which QB Desktop year version do you have? Try also QB Desktop 2021.

Enterprise 23.0. I have it installed. I have not created a company.
We have encountered the same issues on QBD 2022-2024 to convert QBO data. That's why we always recommend QB Desktop 2021 Pro. Otherwise, you can purchase a 3rd party conversion service.

Not sure how to do that.
