Upload rules fails in one company and is successful in another company

I exported a rules file (.xls) from company A. When I try and upload that rules file into company B it is successful, but when I try and upload that rules file into company C I get this error - "Somethings not quite right. Could not upload file". I added the screenshot of the error. Why would it work in one company but not another company?

I'll make sure that you can successfully upload rules in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @bigshirtjonny.

Currently, QBO supports these file extensions for manually uploading bank transactions:

  • Comma-Separated Values (CSV)
  • QuickBooks Online (QBO)
  • Quicken (QFX)

It could be that the .qbo file has been damaged that's why QuickBooks was unable to read it. To isolate this issue we can download them again from your bank's website, then reupload them again to QuickBooks. You can refer to this article to be guided in doing it: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.

If the same thing happens, we can perform some browser troubleshooting steps to fix this issue. It's possible that the accumulated cache in the system is the cause of that error. First, let's access your QuickBooks account in a private/incognito browsing window. Doing this process will help identify if it's a browser-related issue since this mode doesn't save site data. You can use these shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

Then, let's upload the file again. If it succeeds, we'll have to go back to your regular browser and then clear the cache to delete the stored junk files and improve the system's performance. In addition, we can use other supported browsers to further isolate the issue.

Once all of your transactions are in QuickBooks, we can now start matching and categorizing them. Then, to review your accounts and make sure they match your real-life bank or credit card statements, you may visit our Reconciliation guide page

Upload rules fails in one company and is successful in another company

Hi @DebSheenD . Thanks for the reply, unfortunately clearing the cache did not work. I'll give another scenario as to why this is a strange issue. The file is not corrupted either because it imports fine in one company, but that same file in another company will not work with the error i had in my original post. Any other ideas?

Better yet, I just exported the companies rules and then tried importing the same exact file I just downloaded and I still got the "Could not upload file" issue... It seems like importing rules for this one company isn't allowed...

Got it. After inspecting element one of the console logs thrown was that the company subscription ended.

Hello there, bigshirtjonny.

I appreciate your response and sharing additional information about your concern. Also, thanks for trying the recommendation shared by my colleague.

Since you were able to do it in the other company and it isn't working in the other one, I'd suggest reviewing the subscription status. Make sure the status is still active.

Here's how you can view your subscription info:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online as a primary admin.
  2. Select Settings, then Account and settings.
  3. In the Billing & subscription tab, review the information.

If the same thing happens, please give us a short call. We'll check your account in detail in a private environment. Then, review why it's not letting you import. This can also help us determine the cause of the error.

  1. Within your QBO account, go to Help in the upper-right corner.
  2. In the Search tab, click Contact us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concern.
  4. Click Continue.

Here's an article for more tips about bank rules: Set up bank rules to categorize online banking transactions.

Let me know if you have more concerns about importing data and handling bank transactions. I'll be around to help. Bye for now and take care.
