I'd like to share some steps to help you.
The account numbering option might have been turned off in the preferences. Let's make sure it is set up by following these steps:
- Go to QuickBooks > Preferences and then select Transactions.
- Put a check mark on the Use account number box.
- (Optional) Select the Show lowest subaccount only check box. This option shows you only the account you are working with when entering transactions.
- Click OK once done.
Once done, to sort the account by its numbers, just click the column title or header in the Chart of Accounts window. Here's a sample screenshot to see what it looks like:
