My understanding is we would sign up for QB Payments, purchase and connect one of the two compatible card readers from Quickbooks (listed on this page: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/card-readers/qb21-qb31-bluetooth-card... titled "Card reader features and compatibility" )
The issue is the boss says a "QB Sr Partner Development Manager" that he is consulting says that there are no credit card readers that are compatible with QuickBooks Desktop. The machines on the page linked above are only compatible with QB Online and GoPayments.

Hi Dave, Thanks for sharing that page! It actually confirms that there are card readers that work with QuickBooks Desktop 2024.
If you scroll down to the Compatibility with programs and applications section, you'll see QuickBooks Desktop listed with both the QuickBooks Card Reader and the Chip and Magstripe Reader. They connect via the included USB cable and work with Desktop 2021 or newer, so your 2024 version is fully supported.
The Partner Development Manager may have been thinking of the Bluetooth-only setup, but Desktop uses the wired USB connection. You're all set to sign up for QB Payments and order either reader.
