Making ACH payments to vendors using QB Desktop

I was hoping someone here could help me. The company I work for was using Melio to pay vendors via ACH directly from QuickBooks Desktop (Enterprise 2021 version).  Recently, Melio stopped working with QuickBooks. As per Melio, they are phasing out integration with QB.

My company still needs a way to pay our vendor bills via ACH and we want to do it directly through QuickBooks, not an external 3rd party app or by using our bank "bill payment" option. I have been told that QuickBooks does offer Bill Pay but when I go to pay a vendor bill, the only option I see for payment method is print a check or pay via credit card. I do not see a pay via ACH option, I only see the 2 options I listed.

I did contact QuickBooks customer support and after 3.5 frustrating hours I got nowhere. No agent knew how to turn this option on or if it even still existed because some articles point to a service that ended in 2019.

So my question is:

1. Does QuickBooks Desktop allow user to pay vendor bills via ACH?

2. If so, and you are using this service now, how do you "turn it on"?

3. If QuickBooks Desktop DOESN'T offer the option to pay vendor bills via ACH, does QuickBooks Online offer it?

4. If QuickBooks Online has that option, and you are using it, how do you turn it on?

I'm looking for real world help here from users, not QuickBooks customer support answers that just point to an article please. No one at QuickBooks that I have spoken with so far knows how to answer this question correctly or if they even offer the service.  Thank you in advance.

I appreciate you for taking the time to share your concern here in the Community, AUWUser17.

Let me provide you with complete information on how to make ACH payments to vendors using QuickBooks, and address your questions about the discontinuation of the integration between Melio and QuickBooks.

Firstly, please note that the discontinuation of the integration only affects QuickBooks Online (QBO), and you can continue making ACH payments to your vendors using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) with Bill Pay powered by Melio.

Additionally, you can use QuickBooks Bill Pay for QBO to make ACH payments to vendors. To use these services, you'll need to subscribe to a plan that works best for you and your business.

To activate and use these services, you can simply avail a plan, set it up, and start using them right away.

To pay bills in QBDT, you can follow these steps:

  1. Select Pay bills from your homepage or Vendors.
  2. Choose the bill you want to pay.
  3. From Methods, select Schedule Online Payment.
  4. Then, select Pay Selected Bills.

For more information, you can refer to the article: Pay bills online from QuickBooks Desktop. It provides detailed instructions on paying your first bill.

Moreover, to manage your expenses and accounts payable, you can generate vendor reports. You can refer to this article for more info: Customize vendor reports.

Please feel free to come back to this post if you have any other concerns or follow-up questions about paying vendors in QuickBooks. I am always here to help you.

Making ACH payments to vendors using QB Desktop

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I am happy to hear that Bill Pay powered by Melio is still supposed to be working for QuickBooks Desktop.  Unfortunately, on my Quickbooks Desktop that option no longer appears under the Methods you listed in step 3 below.

When I reached out to Melio about this, I got the following answer from them:

"I apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing when trying to schedule a payment in QuickBooks Desktop. Melio connects with all versions that are supported by Intuit including the 2022 version. At this time, it only connects to A/R so your QuickBooks Desktop invoices can Get Paid. I've provided a link here as well that will speak more about this."

They are stating that at this time, Melio only connects to A/R and not A/P. We need it to connect with A/P.

The link you provided above states: Note: Bill Pay, powered by Melio, is currently available for all 2022 and later versions of Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Premier Accountant, Enterprise, and Enterprise Accountant, as well as the 2023 and later versions for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Plus.

We currently have the 2021 version of QuickBooks Desktop, not 2022. The option to use Bill Pay powered by Melio just disappeared last week. Could it be that we need to upgrade to the 2022 version to see the option to Schedule Online Payment reappear? I'm wondering if Melio stopped working with the 2021 version but maybe it still works with the 2022 version.  Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Making ACH payments to vendors using QB Desktop

I am having the same issue and do not see the make online payments selection in the methods tab either.  I also use QuickBooks Desktop 2021 Enterprise Edition.  We are in the process of updating our systems so we can install the newer versions.  Until then, I guess this will mean we need to write checks again.

Oue experience with bill pay has not been the best.  Since this was already offered and integrated, we thought it would work better than other services we looked at which would require double entry.

We have had numerous payments get paid via virtual card, when we did not select this method.  Our Vendors would not accept payments being made this way, so we had to chat with agents to get the transactions reversed so we could make them by check instead.  It takes a while to get money back from transactions that went out to Vendors incorrectly as well.

Hopefully QuickBooks will take note of these issues and correct them.
