Viewing Item Cost from within Estimate.

How do I make it so that I can see the ITEM COSTS inside the Estimate screen?

If it's not possible to see the item costs on the Estimate window, is there any way to quickly access the EDIT ITEM window from within the Estimate screen so that I can access the item cost there, without having to separately navigate to the item on the PRODUCTS AND SERVICES page at the same time?

I incorrectly priced 1,500 items and I'll have to fix them as I'm making the estimates since there's no batch price adjustment feature, and I'm trying to find the most efficient way to do that as I move forward without having to have two tabs/windows up at the same time.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, Vulpes Hardware.

You can see an item's amount on estimates when editing them.

Here's how:

  1. In your left navigation bar, go to Sales.
  2. Access the All Sales tab.
  3. Use your Filter ▼ button and change the type to Estimates.
  4. Hit Apply.
  5. Find one of your appropriate estimates, then click its record to open the edit screen.
  6. In your PRODUCT/SERVICE column, choose an item to identify its cost. This will be displayed in the RATE and AMOUNT column's fields.

After verifying how much an item costs, you can delete it from your estimate if necessary by using its Trash Can (🗑) icon.

As for editing how much an item costs your business, this can only be done by accessing it on the Products and Services screen, locating your product, then selecting Edit under its ACTION column. From the Product/Service information window, you'll be able to update an item's Cost field. Be sure to click Save and close when you're finished making changes.

I've additionally included a couple detailed resources about working with estimates and item costs that may come in handy moving forward:

I'll be here to help if there's any questions. Have an awesome Friday!

Yeah that shows the price the customer pays, there's indeed no way for the Estimate screen to show me what my business' cost for the item is? How much I paid for it? Without going into the Products and Services screen, that is.

Thanks for getting back to us, @Vulpes Hardware.

Yes, you're right. For now, the option to show the item cost inside the estimate window is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Although, you can still see the item's amount on estimates when editing them.

You can also export the product and services list to Excel. Then, create a separate window so it would be easy for you to locate the item's cost. Simply press Ctrl + F from the Excel window and search for the item to easily find it.

To print the product and services list, simply follow these steps:

  1. Go to Sales and select Products and Services.
  2. Click the Export to Excel button.

In addition, you can personally send this suggestion to our Product Developers team inside QuickBooks. This way, they can review your request and help improve your experience in QBO. Here's how:

  1. Select the Gear icon at the top, then  click Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  3. Click Next to submit feedback.

Moreover, you can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.

Please let me know if you need clarification about this, or there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be standing by for your response.

It is unbelievable that QB would have taken this away from years of desktop Versions.  This is a vital component of estimating any project, and will prevent our company from upgrading to the Online Version.

I appreciate your insights about this matter, @link.

The option to add the business cost of an item on an estimate is not yet an option in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) or Online (QBO). You can input the amount or price the customer pays on the Costs column for QBDT and Rate for QBO. As a workaround, you can enter the item's cost in the Description column.

It's my priority to help you with adding the business cost on the Estimate screen. Thus, I recommend sending your feedback to our product developers. Rest assured our they are working nonstop to enhance the product and deliver the best experiences for all QuickBooks users.

Here's how:

  1. Open your QBDT file.
  2. Go to the Help menu, then click on Send Feedback Online.
  3. Tap on Product Suggestion.
  4. Enter your suggestion, then click on Send Feedback.

Your valuable feedback goes to our product development team to help improve your QuickBooks experience.

When you're ready to upgrade to QBO, you can choose a plan that fits your business needs from this link: QBO Plan and Pricing.

On the other hand, you can check out the topics from these links for more tips about estimates and other customer transactions:

Is there an available QB option that does have this feature currently?  I know I am late to this post but I use QBO and had the same question.

Thanks for joining us here, @WiseRVGlass1.

I have some information about viewing the item's cost on the estimates. At the moment, we're unable to view the item's cost within the estimates. You'll want to pull up two reports (Estimates by Customer and Product or Service List). Then, export both reports. This way, you can add a column for the cost manually.

Let me guide you how to do it:

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Enter Estimates by Customer.
  3. Change the Report period and then tap Run report.
  4. Select the Export icon beside the Printer icon.
  5. Follow the rest of the steps that'll guide you through the rest.

After exporting the Estimates by Customer report, pull up the Product or Service List report and follow Step 3 above to export.

Once done, you can now add or merge the cost column from the spreadsheet. See this article for more information about: Export your reports to Excel from QuickBooks Online.

Here's a link that'll help you manage reports in QuickBooks online: Create and manage reports.

Feel free to leave a comment below if you have other questions or concerns with estimates. I'll be around for you. Take care and have a great day ahead.

Did quickbooks make it possible to view item cost from the estimates window yet? It's been 2 years since this support forum was started and there haven't been any groundbreaking updates...

Viewing Item Cost from within Estimate.

Hi, Cden73.

Currently, the ability to view item cost in the Estimate window is still unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

In the meantime, you can utilize the workaround provided by my colleague above to run the Estimates by Customer and Product or Service List. Then, export these reports to Excel and customize from there to add the item cost.

Here's how:

  1. In QBO, go to the Reports.
  2. Enter Estimates by Customer or Product or Service List.
  3. Change the Report period and then tap Run report.
  4. Click the Export icon beside the Printer icon.
  5. Choose Export to Excel in the dropdown.

I can see how having this option would be helpful for you and your business. We greatly appreciate your input and would be delighted to hear your feedback. I suggest providing your thoughts and suggestions to inform our engineers about the specific feature you require. This will enable them to consider incorporating it into future updates.

Here's how to submit feedback:

  1. In QBO, go to the Gear icon at the top, then Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions. Then select Next to submit feedback.

You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.

I'm also adding this article that tackles managing estimates for future reference: Create and send estimates in QuickBooks Online.

Please leave a comment below if you have additional questions about this or anything else. I'll be here to assist. Take care.
