Why does QB desktop require you to back up your QB file before it will allow you to prepare/print 1099's?  That is OK if you are one company, but if you are an accountant, and must back every file you use.  This is a pain.

Are they going to change  this?

Hi there, lclarkcpa.

QuickBooks Desktop requires you to back up your QB file before it will allow you to prepare/print 1099's and other activity in the system. This is to make sure what you entered and prepare will be saved. That said, if you make changes and desire to get back to what was originally entered when it was printed, you can always return to that by using the backup.

It's important that you create backups of your Quickbooks data so that you'll always have access to your business's most current, usable, error-free financial files and information. Without having this data available, you risk losing important files that make managing your billing and monitoring your business’s finances.

For now, we didn't receive any reports from our Intuit engineers as to when this feature will be to change. I suggest visiting our QuickBooks Firm of the Future blog to know about the latest news and updates from QuickBooks Desktop.

Please refer to this article to see steps on how you can use your backup company file (.qbb) to restore your company file in QuickBooks Desktop: Restore a backup of your company file.

Please let me know if you need clarification about this, or there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be standing by for your response. Have a great day!

That doesn't make sense. You should admit it:

- Creating a backup before you create 1099's doesn't help you save what was on 1099's you create after you make the backup

- You can create any of 200+ payroll forms like W-2s without backing up.
