Buy nowI am using Quickbooks Online "Intuit Enterprise Suite"
I have classes turned on. I can run a Profit and Lost by class with no issues.
Balance sheet by class is not an option for me in reports, can anyone tell me why?
@pintadrew While you can use the Filters to effectively have a Balance Sheet by Class, it won't do you any good; it'll just give you a, well, Unbalanced Sheet.
Even Desktop was never really capable of that kind of report, to my knowledge.
Thanks so much for the reply!
Yes, I'm familiar with setting a regular balance sheet to display a single class — that part’s clear and works fine. What I’m referring to is the Balance Sheet by Class report, which is different: it shows a separate column for each class, giving you a side-by-side view across classes.
QuickBooks Desktop definitely had a “Balance Sheet by Class” option.
As for your point about the report being unbalanced — that usually only happens when not all entries are assigned a class, or if you’re mixing entries across multiple classes without consistency. If you apply classes thoroughly and consistently (I hesitate to say "the right way," but I do think it's the correct approach), your balance sheet should remain balanced. And if there's a discrepancy, it typically shows up in the “Unclassified” or “Uncategorized” column, making it easy to track down the issue.
Running a Balance Sheet by Class report is a valuable tool for analysis and decision-making, pintadrew.
In QuickBooks Online Intuit Enterprise Suite Standard, if you assign classes and locations to your transactions, you can customize your balance sheet. Keep in mind that classes are only linked to transaction details, making it impossible to filter the balance sheet report by class since headers aren't connected to them.
Although you can display columns by class, it won’t be accurate. For instance, headers like Accounts Receivable won't sort by the assigned class; they'll appear under "Not Specified."
Alternatively, you can utilize the location tracking feature to classify entries by location since it is linked to both classes and transactions. For more information, check out this article: Run a balance sheet by class or location in QuickBooks Online.
If you want to add information to your report that's not available in QuickBooks, you can export it to Excel for further personalization.
