Yes. You can make the print later as default when writing a check, suzannek1. I'll share insights about this feature in QuickBooks.
When writing a check, you'll want to ensure you put a checkmark beside the Print Later checkbox. With this, it becomes default every time you create a check in QuickBooks Online. See the screenshot for visual reference.
Also, this option adds the check to the print queue where you can enter the check number and print all your checks at once. For more details about creating checks, see this article: Create and record checks in QuickBooks Online.

But that is not a default. That is just an auto repeat of what I did the last time. I enter checks a handful of different ways. What I am looking for is a preference setting that always defaults to Print Later. I can't seem to find the preference settings at all anymore.
Thanks for following up on this thread, suzannek1.
I'm happy to provide some additional info about printing checks in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
After looking through the account settings section of my QBO test account, I wasn't able to find a way to set "Print Later" as the default option. These settings can be checked by clicking the Gear icon in the top right corner and then selecting Account and settings. For more default printing options I recommend submitting feedback to the Product Development Team. This can be done directly through your account by choosing the Gear icon once more, then clicking Feedback.
I'm linking a couple articles below for more detailed info:
