Yes, you can, lisa.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), we can edit the detail type of your accounts in the Chart of Accounts (COA). Please know that changes can affect your accounting and reporting data.

Let's change it by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu from the left navigation pane.
  2. Click the Chart of Accounts tab.
  3. Locate the account you want to change the Detail Type.
  4. Drill down the arrow under the Action column.
  5. Hit Edit, and choose a Detail Type from the dropdown.
  6. Then, click Save.

To learn more about how to use detail types for your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks, kindly refer to this article for the complete information: Learn about account types and detail types in QuickBooks Online.

I see that's where you can pick a detail type that QuikBooks already has listed. I was wanting to add my own detail types to that list as well. Can that be done?

I see where that's where you can pick a Detail Type that QuickBooks already has listed. However, I would like to add/ create my own Detail Type. Can I do so? Thx!

Thanks for getting back to us, lisa-2i-t-com.

While QuickBooks Online offers multiple options for Detail Types in the Chart of Accounts, there isn't a way to create your own type at this time. I can see how it would be beneficial to be able to do so. You may consider submitting feedback to the Product Development Team for review. This can be done directly through your account by clicking the Gear icon and then Feedback.

Once you've entered your suggestion keep an eye out on the Firm of the Future site for more info about product updates and feature releases, as many of these come directly from great user submissions like yours.

Please feel free to drop a comment below if you have any other questions. I'll be here to help in any way that I can.
