Hello there, allureplumbingnc,
We're unable to show the tax per line item. The tax is not based per item but is based on location.
I've got this article handy for your reference about managing sales tax in QuickBooks Online.
Here's another one if you want to use automated sales tax on an invoice or sales receipt.
Let me know if you have other questions.
Thanks for responding. I understand it is per county but, if the invoice knows the county, can calculate sales tax for that invoice in that county, could it not also do it line by line as well?

Hi allureplumbingnc,
I can see the importance of showing the tax amount per item on your invoices. However, this is currently not an option in QuickBooks. You can try to look for a third-party app that is capable of creating invoices in this format.
We're just right here if you have additional questions.
On an invoice can sales tax be shown for each item?
My customer requires this
Hi there, @Paul 888.
I can see how essential this option to you and your customer. However, as mentioned by my colleagues, showing the sales tax per item in your invoice isn't available in QuickBooks Online.
You may consider looking for a third-party app that you can integrate with QuickBooks to create an invoice with this setup.
I've also added these great Community resources in working with sales tax in QuickBooks Online:
Please let me know if you have additional concerns. I'm here to help you. Have a pleasant day.
Don't you love how they halfway read the questions and concerns? They even suggest you seek elsewhere. I may as well just start looking for a totally different option for taxes, invoicing and payments. I mean, why bother asking a question? They don't even seem to care enough to offer to pass it along to others that can make it happen.
Can please share with us the list of localization in which line level tax code & in which document level tax code provided in standard QuickBooks?
Thank you for joining the thread, @xeroaccyr13-gmai.
In QuickBooks, you can only use one tax code per invoice or sales transaction and not the per line level. For now, you can look for a third-party app that can show the tax amount per item on your invoices and the list of line-level tax codes. Just visit our QuickBooks Marketplace and select the app that suits your business needs.
In QBO, we use Automated Sales Tax. This means, the rate is automatic and it'll depend on your customer's address/zip code. In case you want to modify a custom tax rate, you can override the amount to make sure it's correct.
Here's how:
To learn how QuickBooks automatically calculates the total tax rate, you can refer to this article for detailed information: Set up and use automated sales tax in QuickBooks Online. It also contains instructions on how you can file your sales tax return with QBO.
I'm adding these articles for reference. It contains a video tutorial, links on how to track sales automatically in QuickBooks:

I would like to second, or third, or fourth this request. It seems like there are a lot of people looking for it.
I have a couple of clients where my invoices are quite complex, some of it being labour and some of it being products (reimbursed or sometimes sold at a margin). They then have to break down my invoice into their own accounting system, separating each product/service into their own buckets. It would be extremely handy for each line item to show the actual sales tax. The thing that gets me is that there is actually a column for sales tax, and yet only shows the description of the tax which is absolutely useless. Even better yet there would also be the option to show the tax in the subtotal line as well.
Where would I send these change requests to?
Thanks for visiting this thread, mikepage.
I recognize how important it is to add the sales tax in each line item on the invoice. We’ve had a poster of request about this functionality and having this one will benefit a lot of users.
We put a value on our customers’ voices and take them into consideration when enhancing the product. Let me help and guide you on how to send your ideas straight to our product engineers.
Here’s how:

Is this something that is being worked on atleast? The request at its basic level, ie an ability to add non-product lines to an invoice, has been requested for over a year and your coment Rasa-LilaM is the closest to an answer I have found... (´。_。`) Get this on the roadmap!
Hi, It has been a year and a half since you recognised that this is a commonly requested feature. Is there any update on when this will become available?
As mentioned above, having a column on invoices for the tax rate and not actually showing the dollar value for the individual item is pretty useless.
I see the importance of showing the tax amount for each line item on the invoice, Ryan888.
We're unable to specify when this functionality be included in QuickBooks Online.

Dear Glinette
You may or may not aware that in UAE, it is mandatory to show the Tax by line item. Otherwise UAE Federal Tax Authority may levy fines during the Tax Audit. I hope you & QB online team understand the seriousness of it.
Strange thing, in the settings, Tax is displayed line item-wise, but in the live mode, its not!
If QB doesn't have answer for this, we will be forced to switch to different Software providers.
Appreciate your quick & prompt action to fix this issue without further delay.
Regards
Hrashikesha
I can see the convenience of showing the tax by line item through your invoice in QuickBooks Online since it is mandatory in UAE, @Hrashikesha. Please know that QuickBooks displays the sales tax amount solely within the total sum of the invoice, rather than itemizing it separately. Let me explain this further to you.
We value your patience and understanding as we continually enhance QuickBooks Online to be more comprehensive and user-friendly. We recommend sending feedback to our product developer and discussing this with them. As
Additionally, we can explore third-party applications that integrate with QuickBooks Online to provide the functionality of itemizing sales tax amounts separately within the invoice. If such functionality is necessary, we recommend searching for a suitable third-party app within the QuickBooks Online App Center.
Here's how:
As a workaround, you may view your sales tax amount per line item by pulling up a report on the Sales by Product/Service Detail. This report will allow you to display the tax by sales item. Customize the report by changing its Rows/Columns
Please refer to this screenshot to see the result after following the steps above:
Moreover, exporting attachments using the Batch Action feature can be a helpful way to keep your attachments in QuickBooks Online. Please refer to this page mentioned for detailed instructions: Export reports, lists, and other data from QuickBooks Online.
Please let me know what other specific features or requirements you have in mind for the file management application in QuickBooks Online, and I'll do my best to assist you in finding a suitable solution.
Hello. Did you find a solution for that, cause QBKs team seems not to care about this mandatory feature.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Of course I need to do the tax amount per line item, and my customers want that too. In my old free Wave app for tiny small businesses they had this option. But Quickbooks doesn't? Yikes.
