You can create a markup item to add to your estimates, daniel-aec-inc-u.
Here's how:
That's it. Keep me posted if there's anything else you need.
This is a terrible way to add mark up. I should be able to enter my parts and mark a percentage for mark up and it be used for that item in estimates. Doing it as a total for n entire invoice is not useful. Do you mark up a part that is $4 the same as apart that is $30,000? No they have their own individual rate of mark up. This used to be available in the Contractor edition of quickbooks.
This is not what we want you to feel, daniel-aec-inc-u.
The Contractor Edition is different from QuickBooks Online. It's more detailed and caters specifically to contractors' needs.
For now, you can only add markups in QBO with the steps provided above.
You can always leave a reply on this thread if you need anything else.
THIS IS TERRIBLE> A percent mark up is daily need in any sales practice not just construction industry. This needs to be fixed.
Hi there, HCSPLUMB.
I understand how convenient adding a mark-up percentage to an estimate. However, that option is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
For now, you can consider sending your feedback or suggestion directly to our engineers by going to the Gear icon and selecting Feedback. This way, they can review this request and add it in the future update.
In addition to your estimates, you can use this link for future guides: Set up and send progress invoices in QuickBooks Online.

I'm not even sure where to begin with how ridiculous this is.
Your software is used by tens and hundreds of thousands of people and you can't add markup to product on an estimate without showing the line item?
Mind blown Intuit, mind blown.
I believe our sales rep. might have sold us the wrong addition. We are also having troubling figuring out how to add a mark up to each line item we want to mark up. Does the contractor addition also come with invoicing and receivable options?
Intuit doesn't care. Just another prime example of a business product developed by non-business owners/people. This problem has been ongoing since at least 2018 and Intuit has ignored. I don't know how any company can efficiently operate without this simple feature: show "cost" and "markup" on the estimate. I know a ton of people are leaving QB, I believe I am next...what a crap company that is completely out of touch...a complete joke of a company.
I am working on a cost plus job. I need to add the mark up on each INVOICE.
I import materials into the invoice, and then when I try to mark up each item, nothing happens to the price!
I am using Premier Plus Contractor edition 2023.
I know how to add the mark up for an estimate. There should be a setting to automatically add this, but I suffer through having to do it line by line.
What I want to know is: How do I add the markup to billable materials at the end of the job?
Hello Awkwierd
Welcome to the QuickBooks Community! I found this video that I believe may be beneficial to your case.
If this doesn't apply, then I will go ahead and submit feedback to our Developer about making a feature available for this. I can indeed understand how tough and time-consuming it can be for sure.
Let me know if this helped you out! I will be around if you need anything else. Bye for now.
QB online does not care about contractors and doesn't understand that there are also companies, like mine that do Buy-Resell and need to be able to add a markup per item since every item is different and there are few to none of the same item. I'm presently on hold to keep my Premier Contractors Edition of Desktop and, hopefullly, update it ... Meanwhile, this means I cannot use the bookkeeping service that I was hoping to since they cannot log into my QB from afar. SUCKS!!!
QUICKBOOKS ONLINE IS IGNORANT OR DOESN'T CARE !!
This is terrible.
I need to add item by item markups to my estimates.
I do not want my customers to see the mark ups!
@KirkLohry I feel like Intuit's response here really showcases that whole 'the difference between comedy and tragedy is distance' thing.
It would have been hilarious if it wasn't, you know, an actual reply by customer service.
How do I add a mark up to an item so that my customer does not see the mark up?
I buy my custom designed products from vendors and then resale items at different mark ups and prices for each project. I want to be able to send my vendor a PO copied from estimate for the wholesale amount and show my customer the estimate for the marked up amount without them seeing the mark up. This is basic and has to be doable with QB online doesn't it?
I can't believe I missed this before migrating. It seems so basic and it is crucial to my work flow. What a waste of time and money on this!
I know how you can add a markup to a specific item without the customer seeing it, KirkLohry. Let me guide you through this process.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can use the Price Rule feature when creating a new markup for your specific item. But before doing so, let's activate it first from the Gear icon.
Here's how:
Step 1: Turn on the Price Rule
If your Price Rule is already on, skip this step and go to Step 2.
Step 2: Create a Price rule for your product
To learn more about the Price Rules, you can refer to this article: Set price rules in QuickBooks Online.
After creating a price rule, you can now create an estimate without worrying if you're customer will see the markup price.
Furthermore, you can group your materials into different categories or services. By doing so, you won't need to select them individually in the future when setting up a new price rule. This will also help you apply the rules quickly. To do this, we can create a category from your lists and then edit your materials or services to add a category.
I'm still here if you want to ask for further details regarding this, KirkLohry. Please let me know in the comment section.
