When editing the SSN, ensure that you're using the correct format and unique number to avoid duplicates with other users.
If the issue persists using the exact format and unique number, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to determine if this is related to your web browser.
We can use an incognito mode to see if this has something to do with your browsers.

Once logged in, try to change your SSN again. If things are working, then it's likely the browser that's causing the issue. It can be fixed by clearing your cache and cookies. You can also switch to a different supported browser.

Hello, I have tried all the different suggestions and it still will not let me update the SSN. I can not figure why it didn't transfer when I switched from desktop to online.
I appreciate you taking the time to perform the suggestions above, mterkoski.
I understand that updating your employee's Social Security Number (SSN) is crucial for maintaining accurate data recording for future tax purposes. I'll add some details about this and route you to the appropriate support channel that can promptly address your concerns.
When you migrate from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO), this employee information is one of the lists of data that will be transferred. You can check this out for more details: Learn how features and data move from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.
On the other hand, since you're having trouble editing the SSN, there could be a couple of reasons behind it. One reason could be that your employee used an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in the field. However, since you've already verified that the number entered is the correct SSN, another reason could be the presence of a duplicate employee profile with the same info. QuickBooks doesn't allow duplicate information, so it's worth checking your employee lists for any duplicates before updating them.
If the issue persists, I recommend contacting our Payroll Support team to check this further. They have the tools to review your account securely and pinpoint the cause of this issue.
Here's how you can reach them:
In addition, I'd like to share an article that guides you on generating different payroll reports within QBO and how you can manage them to make things easier for you.
