how can I run a report for income by job, not by customer?
Glad to have you here, @mikeshick.
Welcome to the Community! I'd be pleased to help walk you through generating reports by job in QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks has an array of reports that will suit your business needs. You have the ability to filter and customize these reports to show only the data you need. Since you want to generate reports that will reflect your income by job, you can either of the following:
You can filter this report to include only one job.
Here's how:
That should do it! For additional insights, you may check out this article: Customize customer, job, and sales reports.

Job and Customer are synonyms for purposes of Reporting. As Related, the word Job is used to designation Subcustomer, but it still is Customer. For instance, a file that has only Customers and never uses any sublevels, still sees and uses Job Reporting.
Job Profitabilty, for instance, is the Customer Profitability report. There is available a Filter "On," for Name = Multiple, if you need to be selective.
Another Example:
Sales by Customer Summary and AR Aging Summary both allow you to Collapse and Expand the name; click on the little arrow, to Hide and Reveal their Jobs as individual Rows indented under Customer.
Please see my attachment.
I can use he income by customer summary....however, I wish the the sub-jobs could be listed without being grouped with the customer. I want to compare/sort incomes for different jobs by their totoal...not the customer total.
This is Not Possible: "I can use he income by customer summary....however, I wish the the sub-jobs could be listed without being grouped with the customer."
Because the Hierarchy makes them related to the Upper Name.
"I want to compare/sort incomes for different jobs by their totoal...not the customer total."
You need to use the Customize button, top left. Filters tab. Filter on Name = Multiple (scroll Up to see Multiple). Now checkmark Only the names that matter. That's why it is called Filter = limit my view to only what I selected.
