How do I cancel/waive the remaining balance on a partially paid invoice without issuing a refund? Should I just change the original invoice amount?

We had a student make a partial payment on their tuition invoice. The student had to withdraw, and we decided to waive the remaining balance.

There is no refund to issue. So, I don't think voiding makes sense.

Is it okay to just change the amount of the original invoice to match the partial payment? Or is there a better way to handle this situation?

Create a customer credit memo, use a service type item that is linked to the sales income discount account on the credit memo. Then in receive payments, apply the credit memo to the invoice

Is there a way to issue a partial refund to a client for a transaction that was initiated outside of QuickBooks (ie. not a payment made on an QB invoice)?
