How to zero off an old credit card when the balance rolled onto the new credit card?

My client had their credit card stolen, when the new one was issued QB pulled the new credit card in but also left the old card showing. Now I've reconciled them both but the old card is still showing a balance which is not correct as those amounts were cleared on the new card. How can I write this amount off without it showing up on the balance sheet as a negative amount?

I'm glad you came here, @Revitalize_Bookkeeping.

Let's create a clearing account first to move the amount from the old credit card to the new one. You use this account when you cannot move the money directly. I'll guide you how.

  1. In your QuickBooks account, click Accounting on the left navigation pane.
  2. Choose Chart of Accounts.
  3. In the Chart of Accounts window, click the New tab.
  4. For the Account Type, select Bank. You can choose any detail type you need for your clearing account.
  5. Input the Name for the clearing account.
  6. Make sure you don't enter an opening balance before clicking Save and Close.
