Hi there, @SDM2.
Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I am here to help you sort this out. We can create an invoice to your customer to bill it today. You just need to make sure you modify the date and specify it the date today. Let me show you how to create invoice:
You can send customers a link over SMS or a messenger service so they can view their invoice. When you're finished with an invoice, select the Save and send ▼ and then Save and share link. You can copy the link or select Copy link. Customers can view and pay for their invoices from the link.
You can run Invoice List by date report to double check the invoice is show up for this month.
I've added an article for more visual guidelines on how to create an Invoices: Create invoices in QuickBooks Online.
Please let me know how it go, I want to ensure that you be able to bill the customer today. Have a great day!
AileneA,
Thank you very much for your quick reply, it was very kind! My issue doesn't involve how to invoice, as I invoice my customers at the end of the month, every month and I know how to do that with no problem. We are an engineering company that bills our customers for hours spent on their projects every month. Normally in the engineers's time that I enter in "Weekly Time Sheets," I enter the Customer/Project and add hours each week for the billed time spent. This situation is different in that I want to add mileage, i.e. the $0.54/mile for 130 miles to their next invoice that I will produce at the end of this month. I don't know how to enter it as I would normal billing hours that are calculated as hours. I hope I clarified what I am looking for. The desktop version used to allow me to do this, but I don't know how on QBO.
Thanks again for your prompt and kind reply.
Thanks for coming back. I appreciate you for providing us in-depth details of your concern, SDM2.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), use the Mileage feature to track your customers for hours spent on their projects every month.
Here's how:

Hi RCV,
Thank you for responding and trying to help. My problem is that I'm trying to have the mileage my employee uses to be added to an invoice billed to a customer. I have looked at the Mileage option and it asks for date, distance, starting and ending, business or personal, purpose, and vehicle, but what I Really Need is a "bill to customer---________" or bill to Account#________"- information that will be added to their invoice when I bill them at the end of the month, in the same way when I add the billing hours to a customer that was entered when an employee add their hours in the Weekly Time Sheet. Is there anyway to do this? There was a way on Desktop, but it doesn't seem to be here on Online. Can the developers think of a way that billing customers for mileage that we have to travel to their job sites is an important expense/billable item in the Online version? I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my inquiry. I am not frustrated, so please don't read my inquiry this way. That is a problem with writing a question and not talking. My smile is not being shown in my writing unfortunately. :)
Thank you!
Thank you for responding to us back, @SDM2.
Right now, there isn't a way to add a "bill to customer" or "bill to Account #" information on the invoice. I know the importance of adding this as it helps you bill your customers for mileage to their office. This way, you can bill them at the end of the month. I assure you that I'm taking note of your request. Also, I'll make this a priority to send it to our product developers. This way, they can evaluate your preference for future updates.
I'd suggest visiting this website: QBO Blog. This is the place where you can see all our latest news and product improvements.
Furthermore, you can always go to the Mileage menu. This helps you manage all your trips in the program. From there, you can add trips, export mileage, and edit your vehicle info. For more information, visit this article: Tracking Mileage in QuickBooks Online.
Please know that you can count me in if there's anything else you need. I'm cheering you on continued prosperity while using QuickBooks. Keep safe always, @SDM2.
I too have been trying to figure out how to bill our client for mileage!!
It would be nice to have a billable tab in the mileage area.
Hi there, @JCV1.
I hear you and realize the importance of being able to bill your clients for their mileage. Let me provide some information on how you can enter them in QuickBooks Online.
As mentioned by my peers above, being able to generate a bill for a client's mileage isn't available. For now, you may consider creating an expense transaction and make it billable to your client. This way, you can easily record and track billable expenses.
To do that, you'll need to turn on billable expense tracking to record billable expenses.
Here's how:
Once done, follow step number 2 and 3 in this article to enter the bill and link it to your customer's invoice: How to record billable expenses in QBO.
I can see the benefit of being able to bill your client's mileage automatically so you can save up time. That said, I'd encourage you to send this preference to our developers.
Our developers are constantly considering new features to be added to improve the program. This way, we can make it work the way your business needs.
To send a feedback:
You can always visit our QuickBooks Online Blog site to stay updated on what's new with QBO.
For your reference, I'm also adding here a link that can help you in fixing mileage issues: Fix mileage tracking issues in the QuickBooks Online mobile app.
I'm just a comment away if you have additional questions about this. I'm here to help. Take care!
Two years now since the first question and Quickbooks still does not have the feature to make it easy to add mileage to a customer's invoice at the end of the month.
I'm popping into this thread because like the last poster said, it seems like this is still an ongoing issue, that we're not able to bill mileage to clients outside of creating an expense.
My question around this is how to handle the expense once billed. It's already been paid to the employee via payroll - so creating another expense will make it so that our books don't balance properly. How do you suggest we handle this situation? We need to be able to bill the mileage to the client because it is part of our contract, but making it so our books won't balance seems like a bad way to go...
Unless I am mistaken and there is a solution, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
I appreciate you participating in this thread, @NaRis. I'm here to help you relay your valuable input to our Product Development team so your suggestions will be taken into account to improve your QuickBooks Online (QBO) experience.
I understand the need of being able to make mileage billable to customers so you can ensure the accuracy of your accounts. However, QBO is unable to perform this function at the moment. While we appreciate your input, it is subject to review and approval by our software engineers.
As long as you submit feedback directly to our software engineers, rest assured that we'll roll out updates on our website as soon as new features are ready. Our developers gather customer suggestions and requests when designing new updates. Here's how:
You may also visit the Customer Feedback page to track the status of your requests.
Furthermore, when you notice missing or inaccurate trips on your phone or tablet, don't worry. I'm sharing an article on setting up your QBO mobile app and device to track trips accurately: Fix mileage tracking issues in the QuickBooks Online mobile app.

Explore a 3rd party expense management app to integrate with QBO. One app offers a free plan for up to 3 users.
Why on earth would you remove the ability to bill mileage to customers?! It was in the desktop version. I'll be sure to send my "feedback" to the developers every day I can't bill mileage properly to my clients. TWO YEARS you have known about this flaw and nothing has been done? I'm being forced to pay more for QB Online for what? To make it harder to use?
I too have this issue. I'm trying to move to Quickbooks Online because the desktop versions are no longer being supported. I can't believe this hasn't been added after years of development.
I agree - as someone who has to bill the clients for the mileage it would really help wto have a similar system as in QBO. Now that I read this, I don't have a way to track like I did before.
This is very important especially for those of us who visit multiple clients or have field work.
Thanks!
