So I upgraded to plus from essential because I am adding a 2nd location and locations was only available under plus version. I use online only and not on computer.
After upgrading I was able to add the new location the the original location all showing under location "not specified. I have several years of data so i am curious how to take all that not specified data and assign it all in mass to a location name.
Congratulations on your upgrade, @blueakers.
Assigning location in batch to previous transactions isn't available in QuickBooks Online. You will need to edit the transactions individually to assign a location. This way it will not be taken as not specified data.
Here's how:
You can summarise your income and expenses for each location to see which areas in your business are operating. Please follow step 4 in this article for the details: Run a Profit and Loss report in QBO.
I'll be right here if you have more questions about the process. Let me know by leaving a comment below. Keep safe.
Thanks for they reply Rubielyn. Will not work for me. I have 1000's of transactions from the prior 3 years in essentials version. Would take me hundreds of hours to go back and add location to every transaction.
Quickbooks has clearly never considered a single location account using essentials would add another location and upgrade to plus.
I will offer some free guidance. If Quickbooks had thought this through when you upgraded and added locations to your list it would ask you if you want to assign all current data to a specific location. Location is a driver of my upgrade and appears QBO never considered this and offered path to assign data. Might be worth the QBO team actually stepping through some real world reasons upgrade to plus and providing some workable solutions so your old data can enjoy the new features.
Leaving it as Not specified is a horrible path forward and who has the time to got back and add it to 3 years of data.
Thank you for getting back in here, @blueakers
I get your point and see how essential it is to save time if you can add the location in batch to your previous transactions.

So another issue I find with location tracking is again like classes it doesn't do balance sheet transfers, we again have to come up with another work around like doing the transfer as a journal entry as opposed to using the transfers screen.
Hello, @William Lavasque.
I appreciate you for sharing your feedback about generating a Balance Sheet report that includes location tracking. Let me guide you in customizing the Balance Sheet Detail report. It displays a detailed view of what you own (assets), what you owe (liabilities), and what you invested (equity).
Here's how:
Just make sure that to add a location on all of your transactions. This way, it will reflect on the Location column. You can read through this article for more detailed steps in customizing reports and saving it: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.
Also, you can browse these articles to learn more about how QuickBooks handles location tracking and generating related-financial reports:

I know this, but what I am saying is if you do a transaction either as a transfer entry or even accounts payable bill pay. There is not a place to add the location, so when you run the report for locations it excludes that amount. There by making the Balance Sheet off by those amounts. The work around I've found for transfer is to just make an additional JE to assign the location tracking, then in the same entry reverse it without adding class tracking to it. It's like instead of using the features in quickbooks I should be recording everything as a JE instead so I can put location tracking on there.
