I am not sure this can be done in QBDT Pro or Plus but here goes.
I am working with a client and I am updating his books for multiple years, one year at a time.
He has been using QBDT Pro since 2005, and we are currently using QBDT Pro 2019.
He is a General Contractor and often does multiple projects for the same client usually over several years. During the past several years he would create a customer for each job
[For Example]
Smith - Bathroom
Smith - Kitchen
Smith - New House
Is it possible to create a Customer Record for Smith and move each of the jobs into the main Customer Record?
Thanks
EJ
Solved! Go to Solution.
Yes, you can definitely move customers as jobs, GolfNut72.
I'll show you the easy steps on how to move existing customers as Jobs.
Now the customer is already under the main Smith customer.

Thank you for your reply and I understand how to create a new job under a customer.
I didn't make myself clear enough. I have customers that should be jobs. I have a customer called Smith - Bathroom and another customer called Smith - Kitchen and another just called Smith.
Smith is the first job that the contractor did for the Smith's.
Can the Smith - Bathroom, and Smith - Kitchen be moved under Smith?
I hope I made it more understandable.
Thank you
EJ

How can I select multiple jobs under one customer. By accident, a number of jobs were indented under a job number. I want to select them all and drag them back unindented.
I want to officially welcome you to the Community space, @kavinc3.
You can drag the job to its proper place so it will be aligned. Just click the Diamond shape beside the job and drag it under the correct customer. Let me show you how.
In case you need to inactivate the customer's job, so it won't show up in the job posting reports in QuickBooks. Here's how:
To add up, here are some links that you can visit about entering multiple jobs and pulling up reports that contain its details in QuickBooks Desktop for reference:

I know how (and why) to indent under the customer name but I have over 500 jobs to indent. How do I select multiple jobs?
Thanks for getting back to us here, @kavinc3.
I have some information about moving multiple customer jobs. While this option is unavailable, you'll want to drag each job one at a time. Please refer to the steps provided by my peer @Joesem M above.

Hi,
So I have a similar but slightly different issue. A former employee somehow disassociated jobs with their parent "customer". Now I am trying to correct the severed connection by reattaching the job to the correct parent account by dragging and dropping the job to the parent account, however, I keep getting the below message. Is there a workaround? While I appreciate QB trying to protect me, the issue that they are trying to protect me from is the issue I need to resolve. When I run a report for open contracts and balances for the Customer, certain contracts were severed and now I can't see all of the open contracts with balances under the parent account.
Is there a way to resolve this?
Thanks!
=) Anna
Hi @ISoftAnna,
I appreciate you for joining the thread here in the Community. I'm here to lend a hand with the error message when moving a job to a new parent account.
You usually encounter this type of error message if the payments of your invoices are recorded under the parent account. The only way to move the job is by deleting the associated payments.
Before making some changes, I suggest securing a backup copy of your company file. This will help you restore data anytime you want to undo the process.
Here's how to create a backup file:
Once you've secured a backup copy, you can proceed with deleting the payments. Please start by going to the Customer Center section and click the Customers & Jobs tab.
Please follow these steps:
After following the steps above, you can record the payments again using the open invoices.
You can also check this article to know more about the job costing reports you can use to determine how your business is doing on a job-by-job basis: Tracking job costs in QuickBooks Desktop.
Drop me a comment below if you need some clarification about the process. I'll be happy to help you some more.
How about the reverse of this? I have a builder who had all these jobs they wanted to be billed to them, now they want these jobs billed as their own customers. Is it possible to take a JOB and promote it as a customer so that we don't lose the history of all the previous invoices and payments?
Hello there, @slemay. Welcome to the thread.
I'd be happy to guide you on how to convert a job to a new customer.
You may drag the job name to the left under Customer & Jobs to convert the job to the customer.
Let me show you how.
After that, the job name is now converted to a customer name.

Perfect - that worked as expected (just had to click the diamond at the top to re-sort by default). Thank you.
