Our invoices are being automatically posted to "Allowance For Doubtful Accounts" instead of "Accounts Receivable" Why is that happening?

I shouldn't need to be more specific

You'll want to check the income account associated with the products/services offered from the invoice, brad50.

It could be that the selected income account is Allowance For Doubtful Accounts instead of Accounts Receivable. Here's how you can change it:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Select Products and Services.
  3. Under the Action column of the appropriate item, select Edit.
  4. From the Income account drop-down, select A/R account.
  5. Select the Also update this account in historical transactions checkbox.
  6. Select Save and close.

No, we don't get the "income" drop down, so we can't change anything there.  I'm trying to change the credit side of the transaction when we process an invoice from "allowance for doubtful accounts" to "accounts receivable".  When we receive payments, they are posted to the "allowance for doubtful accounts" account and our customer balances are correct, but the allowance for doubtful accounts line item shows up on our balance sheet.

Hello there, @brad50.

Let me share additional information on how your invoices were linked to your income accounts.

The accounts reflected in your transactions journal report relies on the account assigned when you create or add the product and services included on the invoice. I've added a screenshot below for reference.

Also, when you create an invoice, it will be assigned to the Accounts Receivable account. Once it is paid, it will be assigned to the income account you've linked to the product you've added to the invoice.

On the other hand, the allowance for doubtful accounts is not a customer-specific account and listed in your Balance Sheet. It's created at the end of the year to record your uncollectible invoice payments. I'd recommend consulting with an accountant to further assist you in reviewing the accounts assigned to your transactions and their impact on your books.
