Join nowGreetings,
When performing a clean up for the entire year of 2020 when the bank has been last reconciled December 31, 2019, what steps would you take in starting that massive clean up?
I had in mind the following:
1. Match/clear transactions in the bank feed
2. Reconcile for the entire year of 2020
Digging deeper into things I know there will be more I have to do. The books are a slight mess, not too bad, and I am seeking a little guidance in regards to where I should start.
You're on the right path, SamanthaSB.
Good work for reviewing and reconciling the transactions. Let me help you ensure your books will not be messed up.
You can start by checking your bank statement and comparing it with the transactions in QuickBooks. If there are missing transactions, you'll have to enter them so your books will be accurate.
Then, you can pull up your Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet reports to ensure the balances are correct.

Thank you so much for your response Kristine.
After matching and inputing all transactions would it be safe to reconcile for the entire year or should I do month by month for the 2020 clean up?
Thanks for getting back on this thread, SamanthaSB.
I'm here to share some details on how to reconcile your account in QuickBooks.
Once QuickBooks matched the transactions, you can start reconciling for each month. The order matters. If there's an issue with an earlier reconciliation, it'll affect future reconciliations.
You can also check out this article to guide you with the process: Reconciling Accounts in QuickBooks Online.
In case QuickBooks doesn't match your bank statement at the end of the reconciliation, I'd suggest browsing this article for possible fixes: Related Errors When Reconciling.
Additionally, I encourage checking the reconciliation report in QuickBooks. This report is useful if you have trouble reconciling the following month.
