Hi there, lighthouseantiqu.
Welcome and thank you for posting here in the Community. Allow me to help share information about updating the inventory items from taxable to non-taxable.
We can edit/change the inventory items from taxable to non-taxable, however, we don't have the option to edit/update the inventories in a bulk. You may need to update the items individually.
Though, we can import the existing inventory list you have and import it through Excel. You just need to edit the column for taxable to non-taxable. Then import the new list. Once you're on the import screen there is an option to overwrite entries with duplicate names at the bottom of the screen. Just mark check the box to prevent any identical in your inventory list.
I believe that updating the items in a bulk saves time while working with your inventories. I'll take this opportunity to tap our product developers to be considered in the updates. I know this option is what you need for your business, and our product development team is working hard to add new features that most of our customers suggested.
In the meantime, you can visit our Blog site. This is where we share recent happenings and future developments, such as updates to newly added features. The new things are always rolling out for QuickBooks to make work easier. Here's the link: The QuickBooks Blog.
Please reach out with me here if there's anything else you need, I'm determined to ensure your success. Wishing you and your business continued success in all that you do. Have a great day!

You may export the data out to XLS, modify the tax status, and import them back in bulk.

Utilize a 3rd party tool to do so.

I attempted editing the inventory in QBO+, but it was too time consuming. A batch editing tool for inventory is needed in my opinion.
Next, with a bit of trepidation, I download my inventory to an xls file, edited the entries from taxable to non-taxable and uploaded my edited file to QBO+, thus overwriting my existing 700 items in inventory that needed the modification. I have not detected any errors in my inventory after doing this and it seems to be an acceptable solution.

Thank you for responding. I ended up exporting my inventory to an xls file, editing the entries from taxable to non-taxable and uploading them back to QBO+, thus overwriting my existing inventory entries. There seems to be room in this method for damaging my OBO+ due to errors or unintended mistakes, but that does not appear to have happened. I did not resort to a 3rd party app.
Kind Regards,
