I cannot access "Class" when attempting to create a report or modify an existing report. When I access "Filters" the box for Class is empty unlike the box for other filers such as "Account." I am attempting to modify an existing report to make it applicable to a different class or simply create a brand new report. I have used the built-in Utilities - Repair File and Rebuild Data - to no avail. One other thing: I read online that Malwarebytes can interfere with Quickbooks. I don't understand how that could cause my problem because data is stored internally on my hard drive. Nonetheless, I turned off Malwarebytes, but nothing changed.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Hello there, Smerling.
The class data that'll be displayed on the Transaction Detail report will depend on how you set up your company preferences. You have the option to assign a class to Accounts, Items, and Names in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). With this, let's check your class tracking preferences.
To learn more about this, you can refer to this article: How to use class tracking in QuickBooks.
Also, here's an article that'll further guide you in filtering and sorting class transactions through reports by class in QBDT: Categorize data by class.

Thank you for your prompt response. The problem is that item 6 in your instructions is not available. I do not see an "Assign Classes" checkbox in Accounting > Company Preferences. To reiterate I have Quickbooks 2016 Desktop. What am I missing?
Thank you for your prompt response. The problem is that item 6 in your instructions to fix the problem is not present. I do not see an "Assign Classes" checkbox in Accounting > Company Preferences. To reiterate, I have Quickbooks Pro 2016 Desktop. What am I missing?
Are you using QB Desktop 2016 US Pro edition?
Yes.
As I recall, the class tracking feature is only available in QBD 2016 Premier and Enterprise.
If that is the case, how do I fix this problem in Quickbooks 2016 Pro? The problem only started recently. Before I was able to create reports including a filter for Class. Now I can't. The Class filter appears inoperable for new reports. The Class filter does work for existing reports.
Hello, Smerling.
I have a couple of solutions to help us fix the problem.
A data integrity issue can cause data damage to your company file. We can use the Verify and Rebuild utility to fix the issue. Before doing the Verify rebuild, as an initial step, updating the QuickBooks Desktop release version is a good start when it comes to fixing issues you've encountered.
But before upgrading to a newer QB version, check your computer and make sure it meets the system requirements. This will ensure the application is compatible with your setup and will help avoid problems when installing it. Check out this article for detailed information: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.
If the device is compatible, create a backup of the company file to keep a copy of your transactions. Let me help and guide you through the steps.
Another solution is to run and use QuickBooks Tool Hub and then QuickBooks File Doctor to resolve the issue. This program is a collection of tools that can help resolve major issues that a user might face while working on the QuickBooks Desktop. For the best experience, we recommend using this on Windows 10, 64-bit. Please follow the steps in this article: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.
Additionally, to learn more about personalizing your reports, please see this article: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.
Fill me in if you have any questions about reports. Don't forget, we're always right here to give the best assistance so we can help you.
Thank you for the lengthy reply. I already did all the things you mentioned, and out of abundance of caution did them all again, i.e. Verify Data, Rebuild Data, Tool Hub and File Doctor. No problems were identified, and the problem persists.
I have Quickbooks 2016 Pro Desktop installed on three computers, and I have the same problem on all three computers, making me think the problem is my data file, not the program itself. However, I wonder if a reinstall might fix the problem.
I welcome any other ideas.
Hi there,Smerling.
Thank you for giving information about your concern and for following the steps recommended by my colleague above. Please note that this option is only available in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.
Since the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our technical support team. This way, they can further investigate why cannot access "Class" when attempting to create a report in QuickBooks. They also use specific tools to do a screen share to check your setup.

Interesting. I was able to access "Class" in a sample file report, telling me the Class filter works in the program, itself. So the problem appears to be my data file. Am I on the right track? I still welcome any other ideas or suggestions.
How big is your file size? Create a backup file and restore it with a new file name.
