QuickBooks Chart of Accounts on new Accounts

Hi! I am an accountant, and when setting up a new QuickBooks account, I noticed the option was not available to select a chart of accounts. We used to have the option to choose from 30 different industries.

Where can I find that option again? Setting up a QuickBooks with 5 standard accounts is a huge waste of time when the whole chart of accounts used to come through. Am I missing something? Why is this happening?

QuickBooks Chart of Accounts on new Accounts

Hi, @TeresaOfficeOps . Welcome to the Community space.

I'll be happy to assist you with setting up the Chart of Accounts for your new QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.

QBO automatically sets up the Chart of Accounts based on the industry you selected during account setup. However, you have the option to add new ones.

Here's how:

  1. On the left navigation panel, click Accounting.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. On the Chart of Accounts page, select New.
  4. Choose an account.
  5. From the Save account under dropdown, select an account type.
  6. In the Tax form section dropdown, choose the detail type that best suits the transactions you want to track.
  7. You can enter a name in the Account name field.
  8. In the Starting Date and Opening Balance section, use the dropdown to choose a date to start tracking this account in QuickBooks. If you choose a Bank, Asset, Credit card, Liabilities, or Equity account, make sure that your account in QuickBooks matches your actual bank or credit card account.
  9. Enter an opening balance in the Account balance field.
  10. When you're done, select Save.

If you need to change your industry typehere's what you can do:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Go to Account and Setting.
  3. Under the Company tab, select the Company Type.
  4. Click the Pencil icon
  5. Then, choose the Company Industry.
  6. Hit Save.
  7. Now we're Done.

QuickBooks Chart of Accounts on new Accounts

Thank you. The option to include a customized chart of accounts was not available for the new account we set up. Did the process change?

QuickBooks Chart of Accounts on new Accounts

Hello TeresaOfficeOps,

There hasn't been a change in the process, so let's perform some troubleshooting steps to check if you're just having random browser issues.

To start, we will log into QuickBooks Online (QBO) through a private or incognito window. This ensures that the pages won't depend on potentially flawed, outdated, or corrupted cached data. Through this approach, the QBO pages will directly fetch current information from Intuit's server, granting us access to newly updated and precise data.

Keyboard shortcuts for opening a private browser:

  • Google Chrome and MS Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Let's see if you can choose a industry now. If yes,  clear the cache of your browser. If not, consider using a different browser to determine if the problem is specific to the one you are currently using.

Please let me know how it goes. Take care and have a good one.
