Quickbooks Desktop Budget Import IFF

Thanks for the reply. I just tried importing again and it failed. Every line says, "; [ERROR] It's a list or transaction that is not supported by the IIF import process." I don't know if this is a problem with the formatting in the first column or the account name or the amounts I keyed in for each month. Any thoughts? I'm also happy to hire someone for an hour to help me out if need be but I'm not sure how to find a consultant who knows about the IIF budgeting import process in QB.

Brian007 answered this best in his February posting. If you've used the export file mechanism from QB to create a csv/Excel file, at the point you're ready to import back to QB, select the "Import for me, I'll fix later" option, because nothing else worked.

Running a backup beforehand is a good practice, regardless...

I was able to upload a "budget" by clicking on "Import for me, I'll fix later" as suggested. What I noticed, however, is that the columns in the template for months did not import into the right columns in QB. My Fiscal year begins September 1st. In the IIF template file on the right side, I designated my start date as 9/1/2022. I then populated the twelve monthly columns assuming the first monthly column represented September 2022 and the last column (column 12) represented August 2023. However, what shows up in the QB budget import is just the data from the last 4 columns from the IIF file (May 2023, June 2023, July 2023 and August 2023) and it populated it as the first 4 months of the budget (September 2022, October 2022, November 2022, and December 2022). It seemed to ignore the start date I selected in the IIF file. Does the IIF template only work for calendar years? Do I need to set it up differently?

Joining the conversation to help with your question about importing budgets, ARobb.

The import process follows the start of the fiscal year in your company file settings. Let's make sure that the assigned first month of the fiscal year is September. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Company menu and select My Company or Company Information.
  2. Click the Pencil or Edit icon in the right-hand corner.
  3. Proceed to the Report Information tab.
  4. Make sure that both months in the First month in your Fiscal Year and Tax Year is set to September.
  5. Click OK.

Once done, import the file once again and check if it's showing data for the entire fiscal year.

Thanks Jenop2. My company FY and tax year are already set to September.

Yeah - I had the same problem when we were on a fiscal year rather than a calendar year. QB always shifted data to wrong columns. We moved to a calendar/fiscal year in 2022 and all worked well.

Good luck, but I don't hold out much hope...

How do you fix the 'It's a list or transaction that is not supported by the IIF import process' error?

We exported the IIF budget template. Re-imported. All lines reported the same error.

Please let us know how to import. We are using the 2022 QB Premier version.

It gives me great pleasure to help you import files seamlessly, @FRHC

Beforehand, please create a backup company file to secure your data if you ever encounter problems. Once ready, here's how you can import:

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.
  2. If you're in Multi-user mode, go to the File menu, then select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  3. Go to the File menu, then choose Utilities.
  4. Tick Import, then select Import IIF.
  5. Select the IIF file you want to import, then choose Open.
  6. Click OK to confirm the import.
