Join nowIf I am not upcharging my clients for their wholesale Quickbooks products that are billed through my QB Online Accountant account are they an expense or Cost of Goods Sold?
For example, I am billed $35 for a clients QB account. I then bill them $35 for the subscription. Is the $35 a cogs and then the "reimbursement" a "sales of software" under income or should I just use a reimbursable account for both the expense and reimbursement.
To further this how do I enter a subscription that I pay on behalf of a client but do not bill them back for?
If it helps to know I am a bookkeeper aka service based business.
My P/L is attached to show how I am currently entering them. You can see that my cogs is higher because I pay for some of the subscriptions but don't bill my clients back for them.
I an a bookkeeper and run a service based business.
Hi there, CreativeLedgerLLC.
I am unable to provide which account to use when entering a subscription on behalf of a client. However, I can share some about COGS and Expenses so you'll have insight on which account is the best to use. You use COGS when you record the cost it took to make a product that was sold for the year. You use Expense for all the money you spend running your business.
You might also want to learn more about how QBO calculates COGS through this article: Cost of goods sold: How to calculate and record COGS.
For more information about managing expenses, visit this article: Enter and manage expenses in QuickBooks Online.
If you're unsure which account to use, I suggest consulting an accountant to make sure you're using the right account.
I'll be right here if you have further questions while working with inventory or any QuickBooks queries. Keep safe and have a good one.
