Adding "Markup" to my Estimate Template

Similar to QB Desktop, I want to add a "Markup" column to my estimate template in QBO. I want the ability to manipulate markup on each item from the estimate page. Can that be done?

Adding "Markup" to my Estimate Template

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you cannot directly add a "Markup" column to an estimate template where you can manipulate the markup percentage for each item right on the estimate page. However, there are a few alternative ways to handle markups on individual items in your estimates:

1. Use the Item Price and Cost to Calculate Markup:

While you can't add a separate "Markup" column, you can manually adjust the price of each item by including the markup in the price. You would need to calculate the markup percentage for each item and then enter the adjusted price in the estimate.

  • Example: If an item costs $100 and you want a 20% markup, you would enter the item price as $120 on the estimate.

2. Custom Fields for Markup:

You can add a custom field to the estimate template, which could be used to manually enter the markup percentage for each line item. However, this is for display purposes only, and it won’t automatically adjust the price or calculate the markup.

To add custom fields:

  • Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
  • Select Manage Custom Fields and choose the estimate template.
  • Add a custom field called "Markup" or something similar, and manually enter the markup for each item.

3. Create Markup Items as Separate Items:

You can create separate "markup" items in your item list and apply them to the estimate. For example, create an item called "Markup 20%" and link it to the correct account (income, for instance). Then, manually apply this markup item to each line item.

  • Create a new item for markup (you can name it "Markup - [percentage]").
  • Add it to the estimate and set the amount manually based on the markup you want to apply to the item price.

4. Third-Party Apps:

There are several third-party applications that integrate with QuickBooks Online and allow more advanced pricing, including the ability to apply markups per item. Apps like Method: CRM or QBO-compatible estimating tools might offer more flexibility, including adding markup columns and automatically calculating them.
