Adding to Chart of Accounts

I know that I can edit names in the Chart of Accounts, but how do I add new categories?

Many thanks,

Mauri

Adding to Chart of Accounts

I've got you covered, MauriD.

We have just the steps that'll help add new categories.

To clarify, are you trying to add new accounts in the Chart of Accounts (COA) or are you trying to add Product Categories? If you're trying to create a new account, here's how you can do it:

  1. Select Accounting in the left navigation menu.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Choose the appropriate Account Type and Detail Type.
  4. Name the account.
  5. Enter any other necessary information.
  6. Click Save and Close.

However, if it's the latter, then just follow these easy steps on how to do it:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Select All Lists, then Product Categories.
  3. Click the New category button.
  4. Name the category.
  5. Hit the Save button.

For your reference, I'm also including these articles:

That should do it. With these resources, I'm confident that you'll be able to add new categories in no time!

Keep in touch if there's anything else I can help you with to succeed with QuickBooks. I've always got your back. Have a great day.

Adding to Chart of Accounts

I am curious...  Why, when I follow the steps you gave, does it not offer the Product Categories?  My ALL LISTS only has Chart of Accounts, Recurring Transactions, Products and Services, Custom Form Styles, Payment Methods, Terms and Attachments.

Thanks SO much!!!

Doug

Adding to Chart of Accounts

Greetings, @doug0464.

I appreciate your effort following the steps shared by my colleague in setting up categories. Allow me to join the conversation and help you retrieve the missing option.

Product Categories is a feature available to all QBO versions. That being said, the Lists page should include this under Products and Services.

Here are articles that tackle more about this:

Since that is not the case, I recommend performing some browser-related troubleshooting. Sometimes the cache stores up in the system and causes issues in your web pages like errors or missing functions inside QuickBooks.

Let’s verify by opening a private window. Here’s how:

•    Ctrl + Shift + P (Internet Explorer)
•    Command + Shift + N (Safari)
•    Ctrl+ Shift + N (Google Chrome)
•    Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox)

Then, log in to QuickBooks and check if the Product Categories is now available. If it works, clear the browser’s cache to fix the unexpected behavior in the product

If you continue to get the same result, I suggest reaching out to our Customer Care Team for further assistance. They can pull up your account in a secure environment, which we are unable to do in public forums, and help you bring back the missing option.

Here’s how to get in touch with support:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Go to Help at the top right.
  3. Click Contact Us to connect with a live agent.

That should get you on the right track.

Let me know how the call goes. I’m only a click away if you need anything else. Have a good one!
