I operate multiple companies. Each one has its own bank account. How can I check bank account balances on each individual bank account without opening each company in QB to get that balance? Running QB desktop since about 1996.

There isn't a way to see the data in a QB file without opening it.
Your bank's website is probably your best bet, where you'll likely be able to see multiple bank account balances at the same time.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was afraid that was the answer, but hoped I could find a shortcut. I think that the Enterprise version of QB would allow this, but not sure. This is one of the few things I would like to see, but I can see why QB would not want to go that direction in their lower cost versions. I've been running Pro for years and it's (overall) pretty solid. The reason I don't use the bank numbers is the outstanding checks. Actually, we read both numbers to be sure they look reasonable.
