I'm trying to create a custom profit and loss report of businesses by classes against chart of accounts. I can create a P&L report of businesses against chart of accounts OR classes against chart of accounts, but not businesses and classes against chart of accounts. An Excel pivot table would have business and classes in columns and chart of accounts in rows.
We run a non-profit basketball organization. The businesses are team A, team B, team C, etc. The classes are their events like registration, practice, scrimmages, games, etc. The chart of accounts are used to track income, labor, facilities, insurance, etc. I want to run a custom P&L report to find out the facility expense for team A, team B and team C to hold practice; income from registration for team A, team B and team C; referee expense for games played by team A, team B and team C; and is the organization making or losing money?
Alternatives considered
> Exporting QBO into Excel and run a pivot table.
> Use the QBO API to write SQL against the underlying objects.
> Create a compound key of business + class (Team A - Registration, Team B - Registration, etc). Create a P&L report of compound key against chart of accounts.
> Create a compound key of class + chart of accounts (Registration - Facility, Registration - Fees, Registration - Supplies, etc). Create a P&L report of business against compound key.
Any suggestions for creating a custom P&L report with businesses and classes against chart of accounts would be appreciated.

Thanks for providing us all the details on how you want to customize the report, ctt1.
For now, QuickBooks does not have the option to customize the Profit and Loss report the way you described it in your post. Although, you can use any of the alternatives you shared above to get the data that you need in determining the business income and expenses.
To give you more details how to use the customization feature when running reports, please see these articles:
I'll be around if you need anything else.
Suggestion 1. Designate the teams as classes and the events as projects
Suggestion 2. Make the businesses as top level Class with sub-Classes underneath although unless you upgrade to Advanced you have a 40 class limit
Suggestion 3. Designate teams as Customers with Projects for their events. Classes would be optional
