Hi, judy.
In QuickBooks Online, you can only create an invoice from an estimate. The option to add an existing invoice to an estimate is currently unavailable.
Also yes, you can see already billed amounts on a progressive invoice. To do that, I recommend running the Estimates & Progress Invoicing Summary by Customer report.
Here's how:
You can check this article for more information about creating progress invoices from an estimate: Set up and send progress invoices in QuickBooks Online. It'll also guide you in reviewing your estimate, progress invoices, and projects, and creating reports.
Once you're done creating an invoice and receiving your customer payments, here's how to record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.
I'm always here to help if you have any other questions about invoices or any other questions about QuickBooks.
Thank you for the information.
Thanks for getting back to us, Judy. I'm glad that my colleague was able to help you.

Why can’t we change an invoice to estimate? I have needed this on several occasions. For example I copied an invoice as I was bidding sane items for a bid but now it’s stuck in invoice mode and I haven’t been awarded the job as of yet. Also, I have accidently hit invoice and modified to find out that was the case and I have to recreate everything. You really need to consider this option.
I acknowledge how the feature could benefit you, Team DKL. I'm here to share insights about invoices and estimates and why converting an invoice into an estimate is not an option in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
An estimate is a non-posting transaction that only gives a complete view of what your customer might spend on a product or service you're offering. It means that it doesn't affect your income data in QBO. Not unless it was accepted by your customer and then linked to an invoice.
Meanwhile, an invoice is an itemized document of your potential sale from your customer. This transaction is not convertible into an estimate since it's already a posting transaction that affects your profits.
Thus, please know that we can only turn an estimate into an invoice in QBO.
Additionally, we can personalize and manage sales forms in QBO. Doing so allows you to organize how your forms look and what data are visible. To learn more about this, kindly check this article: Customize sales forms in QuickBooks Online.
If you have more questions about invoices and estimates in QBO, please reply to them on this thread. I'll be in all hands to help you.
At times an invoice has been created and mistakenly not from the estimate.
How can the invoice be applied to the estimate.
This seems like a basic request.
I was looking to do this also and found a way to do it if you have progress invoicing set up. I clicked on Suggestions and it brought up the Estimate that I was wanting to link. I clicked add and selected manual amounts per line. Then I deleted the duplicate lines and it kept the invoice linked to the estimate for the exact amount that had been paid when I saved it.
