Changing account on previously entered inventory adjustments does not reflect on reporting.

How can I change the account on previously entered inventory adjustments? When I go to make the edit, it appears to be correct but in all reporting, the adjustment will only show in the original account used.

Hello heatherw1,

I want to clarify a few things so I can give you the exact answer why this is happening:

  • What reports did you pull up that reflect the inventory data?
  • Where did you change the account? Is it in the Inventory Adjustment page or in the Product/Service Information page?

Additional details about this would be much appreciated to further help you.

Thank you...

If I go to Chart of accounts and run a report the Promo expense, adjustments will show up here that I have changed (from Promo expense to Stylist expense).

I changed it on the inventory adjustment page under "inventory adjustment account".

I looked at my P& L report and the amount is still included in the Promo expense.

Hi @heatherw1,

Changing the account in the inventory adjustments isn't retroactive. You'll want to delete and re-create the item to reflect the account in your reports. Let me guide you how.

  1. Go to Gear, then Products and Services.
  2. Look for the item in question, then click the Edit drop-down.
  3. Select Make inactive.

To recreate with the update account, just click New, enter Product/Service information, and then Save and close. Please see this article for details: Add inventory products in QuickBooks Online. I've also added our page about inventory and projects for your reference.

Should you need help with anything else. Please leave a comment below, I'll be around to help. Happy weekend and enjoy the rest of the day.

Hmm your instructions aren't valid to my issue.  I don't want to make a product inactive.

If I understand correctly, I simply have to delete the inventory adjustment and create a new one, rather than editing the adjustment.

Hi there, @heatherw1.

Yes, you are correct. You'll need to delete the inventory adjustment and create a new one. This will allow you to enter the valid account for the inventory adjustment. The steps below will guide you on how:

  1. Go to the magnifying glass and click Advanced Search at the bottom of the box.

       2. From the All Transactions drop-down box, select Inventory Quantity Adjustment.

      3. Press Search and choose the adjustment you need to delete.

      4. Hit Delete in the gray bar at the bottom of the page.

Now your adjustment is deleted, and you can create a new one. You may find this article about adjusting inventory quantity helpful as well.

Please don't hesitate to touch base with me here if you need any additional assistance. I look forward to hearing from you again.
