Contractor Cost

This is partly a QBO vs QBDT question -

We pay contractors per hour.  The per hour cost varies by project, so we enter in the cost when we enter Time Activities on a project.

How do I get reports for a specific period (last month, last week) that will show by Contractor:

Project name|Hours Worked|cost per hour| total Cost

Then total hours worked and total cost for the contractor.  How can these be converted to Contractor Bills that can be paid and reported at year end on 1099s?

Contractor Cost

Hi there, qgdb.

I'll provide different reports to ensure you're able to get a statement that shows for a specific period that will show by Contractor Project name, Hours Worked, cost per hour, and total cost.

From QuickBooks Online, I suggest running the Time Activities by Employee Detail. Then, customize the report to show the hours Worked and total cost per hour and to set the report to a particular period.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Report at the left panel.
  2. Choose Time Activities by Employee Detail in the search icon.
  3. Click the small gear icon. Then, choose the Rate as the total cost per hour.
  4. Select the Amount box to show the total cost for the contractor.
  5. Choose the Start and End Time to manually see the total hours worked.
  6. Click the Run report.

In the QuickBooks Desktop, you can run Time by Job detail and customize the report. This way, you're able to select Duration to show the total hours worked. However, you'll have to manually click each contractor to see the total cost.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Reports menu.
  2. Choose Jobs, Time & Mileage. Then, select Time by Job detail.
  3. Click the Customize Report button.
  4. Go to the Display tab.
  5. Choose Duration in the search columns.
  6. Hit OK.

On the other hand, I recommend creating bills so it will be converted to the Contractor Bills that can be paid and reported at year-end on 1099s. You can refer to this article to see the process: Enter bills in QuickBooks Desktop.

Please refer to this link to see different articles that cover basic information about customizing reports in QuickBooks Desktop: Customize payroll and employee reports.
