Let me add information regarding customizing invoices in QuickBooks Online.
The changes made when customizing invoice templates will only apply to new invoices, where it will not update the existing ones. Therefore, the message added to your template will not appear on the invoice you pulled up if it was created before updating or creating the template.
In this case, you can delete and recreate the existing invoice if you want to implement the changes from the customized template on that specific transaction. However, it's not recommended if the invoice was already paid through electronic payments.
