Does Quickbooks online offer a feature that can remind you to make an estimated tax payment?

I can share some information about how QuickBooks Online shows tax payment reminders, @blucrew.

All you need to do is tell QuickBooks Online (QBO) where you collect sales tax. Add multiple tax rates and agencies and signify to the system how often you file them to remind you when it's time to file. Please follow the steps outlined in this article: Set up where you collect sales tax in QuickBooks Online. However, this doesn't remind you to create estimated tax payment in the system.

On the other hand, it seems that you want to pay estimated taxes right to the system. You may want to consider the QuickBooks Self-Employed with TurboTax bundle that promotes filing estimated taxes since QBO has a different sales tax setup. I've added an overview on how we track estimated taxes to this program: How QuickBooks Self-Employed tracks self-employment taxes. This will allow you to create a reminder to notify you to pay estimated taxes.

I think they're talking about federal and state taxes not sales tax because I have the same questions.

Allow me to share some information about estimated tax payments in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @numbersmakemeinsane

QBO has different tax calculation processes. It also has a wide range of offered features. Setting up a reminder when creating estimated tax payments isn't available. However, this feature is available in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

Can I set up quarterly tax payments as a bill or is that completely wrong? I would like to see what bills/payments I have coming up and could this be included in that?

Hey there, @bigmac1973

Welcome to the Community!

To clarify, are you referring to estimated taxes? Also, taxes are you needing to create tax payments for?

This will help us determine the next steps for you and your business. I'll be waiting for your response!

Yes, quarterly estimate payments. For example, I have fed and state quarterly payments due September 16th. What's the best way to show these as upcoming payments? Add them as a bill? I know this may seem like a silly question It just wasn't sure what the best process was for reminder that these are coming due in a couple months.

Thank you for adding more details about your concern, bigmac1973. Let me add further info about setting up tax payment reminders in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

In QBO, there is no direct option to set up a reminder when creating estimated quarterly tax payments. This option is only available in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) since QBO has different tax calculation processes.

Additionally, using bills to track federal and state quarterly estimated tax payments is not recommended. Bills are intended for money tracking, not for managing tax payments. It could potentially result in inaccurate financial reports and tax records.

As a workaround, consider setting a recurring reminder in your calendar app for the quarterly due dates (typically April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year) to maintain compliance with federal and state tax regulations and ensure accurate financial records.

Also, tax payment reminders in QBO are displayed in the Task section of the Dashboard. You might want to check it often to ensure you'll file your taxes promptly.

Here's how to see this reminder:

  1. Click the Dashboard option on the left menu.
  2. Navigate to the Tasks section.
  3. Go to Your payroll items section.
  4. Tick the Show more link to see all the taxes you need to pay.

When you're ready to file your business taxes, you can review these articles for the most up-to-date quarter schedule and payment deadlines.
