Entering Beginning Balances

I am a new Quickbooks onlilne user.  I have done software conversions or started fresh before so I proceeded similarly in this situation.  I first created my Chart of Accounts and entered all GLs, selected account types, etc.  Then I went in to enter the beginning balances.  Where do I do that?  I'm not finding a place that will allow me to click and enter the amount.  HELP please!!

Entering Beginning Balances

Let’s head over to the Chart of Accounts and input the beginning balance for that account, @lamich74. I’d be happy to guide you through it.

First off, congratulations on setting up your accounting system, and welcome to QuickBooks Online. Entering beginning balances for each of your accounts is a crucial step to accurately reflect your business's financial position as you start using QuickBooks.

Now, can you please confirm whether you’ve already created an account in the Chart of Accounts without entering an opening balance, or if you’re still in the process of creating one?

If you’re still setting up an account, you can enter the opening balance right there. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click New, then set up your account.
  3. In the Opening Balance field, enter the balance that reflects your bank or credit card account. A quick tip: Ensure you know the exact amount for your opening balance.
  4. Choose the date you want to start tracking your finances in the As of field. You can also add a description in the Description field for more context about this account.
  5. Finally, select Save.

On the other hand, if you’ve created an account without an opening balance, here’s how to edit it and update the starting date and balance:

  1. Go to the Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate your account and select View Register.

  3. Find the opening balance entry. Tip: Sort the date column to show the oldest entries first.
  4. Click on the opening balance entry to edit it.
  5. Update the date and the amount as needed, then select Save.
