Buy nowHi. I drive for Uber part time and track my mileage. I use the standard mileage deduction. What is the best practice to account for the mileage in QuickBooks? Right now I have the total sales (income received from Uber) and expenses I incurred throughout the year. Should I expense the mileage in QuickBooks? Right now I am deducting the mileage only on Schedule C, not in QuickBooks. As a result my profit in QuickBooks is higher than it should be. Thanks.
Thanks for posting in the Community, @j1dias.
I'll be helping you track your expense and revenue by using QuickBooks Desktop's job costing feature.
First, you can set up a Customer:Job for each of your jobs. This enables you to keep track of your income and expenses on a job-by-job basis and can simplify your bookkeeping if you add another job for that customer in the future. Here's how:
Second, ensure to assign your expenses to get a complete job cost image. Record the mileage in the Enter Vehicle Mileage window.
QuickBooks calculates the appropriate mileage expense based on the dates and rates you enter in the Mileage Rates window. Just keep your mileage rates up-to-date so you can always take advantage of the latest IRS deduction rates for your business vehicles.
Then, add your mileage to the Vehicle list. Here's how:
Lastly, jump into Step 4 through this article to bill your customers: Track job costs in QuickBooks Desktop. This includes how to access mileage reports.
On the other hand, I encourage consulting an accountant for legal advice to keep your books accurate. They know which accounts to use to record the revenue and expenses correctly.
Feel free to add some comments if you have other concerns about recording transactions in QuickBooks. I'll get back to you right away. Have a nice day and more Uber trips!
Thank you for your answer.
I am afraid it doesn't solve my problem. As I mentioned on my original post, I am an Uber driver. i don't charge mileage to my clients. I track mileage so I can decuct it on my taxes.
Currently my P&L has only the income line:
Income - $1,000.00
Profit - $1,000.00
My question is - should I expense the mileage? If I do, my P&L would look like:
Incoime - $1,000.00
Mileage Expense - $300.00
Profit - $700.00
I am not sure if I should do this, because the mileage is not really an expense - I am using the IRS standard mileage rate.
Thanks.
