Hello clearview872,
Let me help you with this. QuickBooks Online doesn't have a report that shows gross sales per month. However, you can pull up the Sales by Product/Service Summary report and change the date range per month. Then, export the report in Excel. I'd encourage you to request that this option be added. You can send a product suggestion by clicking the Gear icon and selecting Feedback. We'd really appreciate your suggestion since many of our updates come from customer recommendations.

To show gross sales by month for 12 month period (or any custom date) on one report:
Reports / Company & Financial / Profit & Loss Standard.
Click: Customize Report; In the center where it says Display columns by________ across the top. Click the down arrow and choose Month. Click OK
Set the dates on you want the report for; refresh.
You should have your gross sales by month.

I find it staggering QBO doesn't allow a management tool as simple and fundamental to business operation as sales by month.
This is exactly the report I was looking for. Thanks for the easy instructions

Hi -
I run the books on a cash basis so the P/L shows cash received not invoices issued. Is there a 12-month view of invoices / invoice totals by month as I would get if I were running the books accrual ?
thanks
Thanks for joining this thread, @GBA7.
You should be able to switch between Cash or Accrual for the Accounting Method in the Report like the screenshot below:
If you don't see that option, then we can do some troubleshooting to isolate this behavior. I'd like to start with opening a Private Window or an Incognito Window in your web browser. This will open your account in a clean slate and loads fresh data. Here's how:
Once you're in the Private / Incognito Window, sign in to your QuickBooks Online account and try to run the Profit and Loss Report again with the Accounting Method. If it works, you can go back to your original browser and clear the cache. Alternatively, you can use other compatible browsers.
You can also run the Invoice List to show the Invoices by the month and see what you would be received by the total of all of the Invoices for that month. Another option would be to run a Transaction Detail Report with some customization to show the Accounting Method and by Invoices and/or Invoices and Payments Only.
Let me know if you need further assistance. I'm always here to help you in any way that I can. Have a safe weekend!

Really not a good product when fundamentals are missed. But given their enormous market share, they don't seem to care.

if you want a comparison to previous year, go to reports, company and financial. there is options for all kinds of reports there. i did profit and loss previous year comparison
Hello,
Is there any other way to get sales by month for the fiscal year?
Our company does custom work entirely and so the inventory section of QBO does not work for us. It actually makes our invoicing difficult so we have stopped using it!
We are looking for a simple bar graph style report that shows the sales each month for the fiscal year and potentially a comparison with the year before....All the other info is not needed in the least.
Thank you
Hello there, @pamvanart.
I got your point on how important to set a default period in the Sales graph. However, the period that we can select is limited, and we're unable to customize a specific time on this page.
Still, you'll see your sales data from this graph by choosing the corresponding time. The closest time that you can select is the This year by quarter and Last year by quarter option. Take note that you can still select other options.
In case you want to run a detailed sales report, you can generate the Sales by Customer Detail report and customize it. Here's how:
1. On the left panel, click Reports.
2. Type Sales by Customer Detail in the search box.
3. Choose the Report period, and click the Customize button.
4. Click Filter to expand, and choose the customer you want to view from the Customer drop-down list.
5. Select Run Report.

it was so easy in Desktop. how did it get omitted in the "upgrade"?
Hello, Electricpreacher.
I understand the challenges when a feature is accessible on the other version while not possible in QuickBooks Online. I understand how this can impact your productivity and navigating it.
Though QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online have several differences in terms of features, QuickBooks Desktop is software installed on your computer. It is typically used for businesses that require robust inventory management, job costing, advanced customization, and industry-specific features.
While QuickBooks Online is cloud-based and offers the advantage of accessibility from anywhere with an internet connection, it's designed for small businesses and offers features such as automatic backups, automatic updates, and the ability to integrate with various apps and services.
One possible solution to calculate the gross sales for each month is to run the Sales by Product/Service Summary Report. This report provides a detailed breakdown of gross margin and gross margin %. You can customize the report for a specific date range, such as a month. On the other hand, you can export the report to Excel and manually add up the gross sales for each month. This will give you a clear picture of how your sales are performing on a monthly basis.
Furthermore, I suggest sending Feedback to our Product Engineering team. Your Feedback is extremely important to us as it can help us create better products and services. Our Product Engineering team is always looking for ways to improve and enhance our offerings, so your suggestions could be very valuable. By sending your Feedback to our team, you may allow them to carefully evaluate and consider your ideas for inclusion in our future product developments. So, please don't hesitate to share your thoughts with us. We appreciate your input.
Here's how:
You can track the feature requests you submitted through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.
Also, regarding the "how did it get omitted in the "upgrade"?" I'm a little bit confused. Can you please add additional screenshots to ensure we provide clear and detailed information to help ensure that you receive the best possible assistance. Screenshots can help convey detailed information about the problem you're experiencing, allowing us to understand the issue better and provide more accurate solutions.
