I am unable to drill into the QBO Project Budget vs. Actuals report to see the original budget or even into the actual transaction detail. How do I get to the details (ex: cost is over budget for a certain cost code/service item)? When I click the drill down, it takes me back to the project page. The only ability I have from there is to click on the total project cost that takes me to the general ledger detail. This is absurd! I have been on the phone with Intuit for the last hour with absolutely no answers. Please help!
Hi there, TXUser13.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), after running a Budget vs Actual report, you can view the figures for any over-budget amounts. If you're not seeing it, review and ensure the Over Budget box is checked. Here's how:
I'd also like to know where you run the report from, whether inside Projects or in the Reports menu.
Finally, since you mentioned that when you click the drill down, it takes you back to the Project page, we can perform basic troubleshooting steps to find out if accumulated cache files in your browser are causing these unexpected issues. Start by opening a private browser or an incognito window on your QBO account. Based on your browser type, please refer to the keyboard shortcuts below:
After signing in, revisit and check if you can now pull up the report with the details you're looking for. If so, go to your regular browser and clear its cache. You can also use other supported browsers.
If you come across any challenges while running other financial reports in QBO, please inform me by leaving a comment below. I'm here and ready to assist you at any time.
Thanks for the reply. I have run the Project Budget vs Act from inside Project and directly from Reports. I have cleared my cache and used 4 different browsers including Incognito to test it out. I would love to think I am doing something wrong. Below are the screenshots of what I am doing and where QBO is directing me. Thank you so much for trying to help me!!!
Let me provide details to help you run the report you need, @TXUser13.
Based on the screenshot, the Project Budget vs Actuals was accessed through the Project menu, which is why the over-budget information isn't showing. To view the over-budget for a specific cost, navigate the Budget vs Actuals section in the Reports menu.
Here's how:
You can also run the reports with these options to see your budget's latest data. Check out these articles for reference as you continue managing your finances.

Hi Michael,
Although I appreciate your attempt to help me, you aren't understanding that I'm looking at the Project Budget vs Act report by cost code (service item). In construction, we aren't looking at the G/L budgets; our budgets are loaded by cost code so we can see over/under for each one. We may have hundreds of cost codes/service items that are mapped to only 5 or 6 G/L accounts in CGS. The existing Project Bud vs Act report is great; the fact that you can't drill into see the actual cost for the cost code is a huge issue. And it is a HUGE MISS by Intuit.
And the fact that it is so seamless in QB Desktop is even more of an insult to injury.
This is a product limitation, @TXUser13. Allow me to share the steps of the feedback process.
We see the importance of drilling down the transactions in the Budget vs Actual report. To add this ability to QuickBooks Online (QBO), I suggest sending feedback directly to our product engineers. They're responsible for analyzing your request to add for future updates.

Let us know if you have other concerns with the Budget vs Actual report in QuickBooks Online.
I am having the same issue. We had to move over from Quickbooks desktop where we are used to being able to see detail of actual costs for a project.
I cannot see any detail in QB Online either so I am having to enter all my project costs into both Online and Desktop for every project so I can see details.
I should not have to do this and don’t understand why this feature would not be available in QB online.
TXUser13, were you ever able to get anywhere with this?
I can see how beneficial it is for you to see details of actual costs for a project using QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Lkdean. Let us dive in with this concern.
We are constantly working to improve the QuickBooks' features to provide our customers with the best online experience and reach your business goals. They will review your recommendation and may consider it for future product enhancements. Here's how:
1. Select the Gear icon, then choose Feedback.
2. Type in your comments or product suggestions.
