I just lost an hour's worth of data entry while composing an invoice because Quickbooks/Intuit signed me out. Any suggestions besides "you should save your work"?

Hello there, andy-miller.

Thank you for letting us know about your recent experience you've encounter in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks Online uses a time-out function for security. This timeout helps prevent unauthorized persons from accessing your data, especially when you're away from your computer. The time of inactivity is based on the time that you last save. This means that if you've been working on your invoice and walk away for 20 minutes, you could come back and be signed out.

We can keep you logged in for a maximum of 3 hours of inactivity, but you must be logged in as Master Admin to do this. Here's how to do it:

  1. Click the Gear icon, and choose Account and Settings.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab.
  3. Click the pencil icon to edit the Other Preferences section.
  4. Set the hour to Sign Me Out If Inactive for.
  5. Click Save and then Done

Though, the only workaround to prevent losing your data from signing out is to Save your work. I'll get this opportunity to tap our Product Development Team to bring in this feature. Rest assured, our Product engineers are striving hard to develop the best features to suit the needs of our customers.

Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any other concerns. I'll be here to assist you. Have a great day!

This has happened to me many times.  This has happened even when I save an invoice and leave it open.  So the answer to save your work does not always help.
