Is there an easier way to allow my clients to tip me via an invoice? Having an overpayment does not seem professional and I'm afraid It will ruin my chances to get tips.

Welcome to the Community, @thebenjaminlevi. The option to add a tip in the invoices is currently unavailable in QuickBooks. Though, I can guide you through recording a tip to a sales receipt.

At the moment, this is the easiest way to record a tip. First off, let's turn on tips in the settings. Here's how:

  1. In the Settings menu, select Account and Settings.
  2. Select the Sales menu, then select the pencil icon in the Sales Form Content section.
  3. Depending on who receives the tip:
    • Select My Team if you use tips to pay your employees or others. This will create a liabilities account for tips.
    • Select Just me if you only pay tips to yourself. This will create an income account for tips.

      4. Confirm the template switch. Then select Okay

      5. Click Save.

You can now add a tip to a sales receipt. Here's how:

  1. Click the + New menu.
  2. Choose the Sales Receipt.
  3. Enter the tip amount. You can find this in the totals/subtotals and are not affected by tax or discounts.

Another way is to add a separate line item for the tip by adding product and service items when creating an invoice.

Furthermore, learn about how to turn an overpayment into a tip when a customer overpays an invoice to give you a tip.

Feel free to post again if there's something you'd like to ask. I'm always around to help!

So wait. Let me get this straight.

I have asked for a deposit (invoice #1). I have completed the job and I am asking for final payment (invoice #2). Now you want me to send another invoice for the client to pay a tip, which should be a voluntary action after services are met upon agreed terms? I literally must ask them what the tip amount was so I can create an additional invoice for them to pay the tip? All being in addition to a deposit, final invoice, and now a “tip” invoice??

How hard can it possibly be to add this as an option during the client’s transaction of any payment’s?

Hi there, Nick Bolen.

Allow me to share additional information about adding tips on the invoice in QuickBooks Online.

There is no option for a voluntary tip in QuickBooks Online. The tip item must be added to the invoice.
