I am trying to create a report of cash inflows and outflows from a particular account. When I select the dates and options for the report and total by payee, it will not list the deposits by the "received from" payee. Why not? I go into the transaction from the report and cannot find any name that is not properly on the deposit.
It's good to see you here in the Community, cbmattick.
Let me share some insights about the transaction detail report in QuickBooks Desktop.
Tracking all your transactions is good bookkeeping practice. But before we start, may I know what type of account did you select to run the transaction detail report? I'd appreciate it if you can give us few details and a screenshot of the report you tried to pull up.
Each account type has its own account register. That said, if you pulled up a report for Transaction Detail By Account, it will normally show the categorized transaction in a specific account type. Check this article to learn more: Create reports in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Also, you can run Deposit Detail report to review all bank deposits.
Here's how:
This report will show you the deposits and payments made by your customers. It will also show the default account used to record those payments.
I've added this link in case you want to personalize your own report: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Feel free to get back to me and add some details or ask any follow-up questions. I'll keep an eye on your response. Have a good day!
Thanks, Archie, for offering to help. For some reason, this only affects the deposits (among all transactions). Attached is a screenshot of the portion of the report. This is the only group of transactions that does not show the name. I have gone into all of the transactions and the name is there. I checked the customization panel and it is set to show transaction types and set to "All" transactions. As a workaround, I added the name in the memo so that it would show up. I know I can access the information in other ways. It is just that I have been doing these reports for years and this is the first time I have had this problem. Why won't it work now?
Also, the account whose transactions I am trying to view by payee is a bank account.

Since you are missing names on the report, I recommend that you run the verify and rebuild data tool to see if there is any data issue within your company file and correct this problem. The first step would be to run the verify tool. Before doing so, let's make sure to update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.
To run the Verify Data utility:
Here’s how to run the Rebuild utility:
Depending on the size of your company file, it may take a few minutes for the process to start. However, when the rebuild tool is completed, run the Verify tool once more to check for the remaining data damage. Once you received that message as stated above, the company file is good to go.
For reference, you can read this article: Verify and rebuild data in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Please let me know how it goes on your end. I'm determined to get this fixed for you. Stay safe!

I followed the steps you suggested. I checked to make sure I had the most recent version of Quickbooks for Mac. I do: v19.0.11 v12. When I went to verify data the first time, it did show errors. I then rebuilt the data and ran verify data again. It said there were no errors. I then went into reports and tried to build a new "transaction detail by account" report. Before I filtered the report by account, It showed the entries by payee including the sources of deposit. However, when I filtered to show transactions by my bank account, it does not show the names of the sources of deposits. They are in a "no name" category at the bottom of the report. This, despite the fact that I have gone into the deposits themselves and see the names. If I go in and uncheck the box to select my bank account, the report engine shows no report. If I go in and recheck the box, the report comes back. The category at the bottom of the report with all of the deposits is "No n" rather than "No Name".
Thanks for the prompt response, @cbmattick. I'm here to share additional troubleshooting steps to fix the issue when running the transaction detail by report.
Since you're done performing the verify and rebuild data, we can try to reinstall the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac. This removes QuickBooks with the installation files that were left behind to reinstall the program from a clean slate.
For a detailed process, please refer to this article: Reinstall QuickBooks for Mac using clean install.
