Where can I locate a summary of expenses by category?

I can help you locate the expenses by category, @thesweatshak-gma.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), there is a variety of reports you can access and customize to suit your business needs. We can pull up the Transaction Detail by Account report. This displays transactions and total for each account in your chart of accounts. We can filter it to show all expenses accounts.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. On the search bar, type Transaction Detail by Account.
  3. Click the Customize button.
  4. Set the Report period.
  5. Under Filter, put a checkmark to Transaction Type.
  6. Choose Expense.
  7. For Distribution Account, choose All Expense Account.
  8. Click Run Report.

I've also added these articles for your future reference:

You can post anytime if you have other questions about accessing reports in QBO. I’m always here to help.

Hi, @thesweatshak-gma.

Hope you’re doing great. I wanted to see how everything is going about the summary expenses report you had the other day. Was it resolved? Do you need any additional help or clarification? If you do, just let me know. I’d be happy to help you at any time.

Looking forward to your reply. Have a pleasant day ahead!

Thank you so for this info! Saved my life. I called customer service several times and I am paying to have more assistance, but no one was able to tell me how to run this simple report.

I have been looking for this too and also have never seen a "Transaction List by Account" option.  But here's what I just found!  There's a drop-down menu at the top of the Reports page. It says, "Find report by name".  Click on that and choose "Account List."  I was just able to view and print up all of my accounts, including all of my expense categories!  Finally!

It still works if you switch to classic view, but it is out of date for the new features

I appreciate you joining the thread, Athlaw. I'll share information that could help you tailor and refine your Transaction Detail by account report in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

It could be that you're reports page is in the new layout. In this new layout, there is no customize button, but you can still modify your report through the FiltersGeneral options, and Columns buttons. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. On the search bar, type Transaction Detail by Account.
  3. Select Filter if you want to filter data (for example, the Account, Date, Transaction type, etc.).
  4. Choose General options for the format.
  5. Click Columns to add more and reorder them according to your preference.
  6. Click Refresh Report.

If this is not the case and you're still in the old layout, I suggest using a private browser to access your account. This way, you can identify if it is a browser-related issue. If the private browsing session works, clear the browser's cache so the system can restart. This task is also possible in other supported, up-to-date browsers. Clearing the cache will reboot the system, allowing you to work with clearing the stocked cache and cookies causing the issues.
