Did you create an Invoice or a Sales Receipt for the customer?
If not, it will not show up in the P&L Detail Report.
I've got you covered, @cshort.
Customer names can be added to most variants of the Profit and Loss report with ease, here's how:
Adding Customer Names to the P&L

By doing this, you can add many different fields and columns to your Profit and Loss reports to sort by. Alternatively, I recommend checking out the Profit and Loss by Customer for a different view of income and expense information sorted by names. You can locate this report using the same instructions in Step 1.

Is there any way around this? I work at a non profit that gets unsolicited donations so there aren't any invoices to create, and each day's deposit can have multiple small receipts from multiple customers.
Thank you for joining the thread, @transportgroupfinance.
The names that are showing up on the Profit and Loss report are the names that are selected as the owner of the transactions added. For the deposits, the customers' names are added as a line item under the Add funds to this deposit section reason why the names won't show up on the report.
If you wish to see the names on the report, you can add them under the Description column of the deposit. The names will then show up under the Memo/Description column on the Profit and loss report.

Hi there, @krististreetpaws. For security purposes, we've removed your email address from this thread.
Let me share some insights on how QuickBooks populates the data on your reports. By default, the customer name won't show in the Profit and Loss report since this only contains the summary of your business finances, such as gross income, expenses, and net income.
To view the customer, vendor, and payee names, you'll want to pull the Profit and Loss Detail report instead. I'll show you how:
You can also memorize this report to save the customizations you've applied. Additionally, I recommend reading this article that to help ensure that you'll get the most out of your QuickBooks reporting experience:
I'm just a few clicks away if you have any other concerns or further questions about reports. Just add the details below and I'll take care of them.
I am sorry I was not more specific. I am running the detailed P&L and the name is not showing up. I just spent over an hour online with customer support for them to tell me that it is not possible for split transactions. She suggested I send my concern through the feedback button. I would strongly suggest others do the same if you want this to be corrected.
if there isn't a way to force the name to show in the Profit and Loss Detail report (or Statement of Activities Detail report), there should be an easy way to populate the name in the description field--this is really frustrating for non-profits that book donations as direct deposits (no invoice)
This does not make sense to me, to add the name AGAIN to the description box. They should show up under the name field. Is there not another way to get these names to show up with split deposits???

Just joining the thread to echo what others are saying. As a nonprofit, we like to run reports on what and when each customer gives on an annual basis. That income is not always invoiced beforehand, so by QB reporting constraints, we can't see who gave on our daily deposits without adding their name to the description, which is completely superfluous and repetitive after already entering it when making the deposit. Furthermore, there's not even a way to customize the reports to populate this field. Not being able to see this information quickly and easily is incredibly frustrating and inefficient to our reporting process. PLEASE fix this ASAP, or at least provide a workaround or ability to customize a report to unique needs!!
Chiming in to echo the other nonprofit users in this thread. We began copying the name into the memo/description as a work around after a year of troubleshooting, but it is not feasible for us to go back and enter this info into hundreds of individual donor lines over the past year.
This is not an issue in quickbooks for nonprofits, desktop. I think the quickbooks support team is great, and they assured me everything I needed would translate from desktop to online. Unfortunately, it appears quickbooks did not realize how important this information in the detailed PL report was for nonprofits, or that this was a "needed" function of nonprofits!
Having the customer(donor) names show up in the detailed revenue report, when there is a field clearly marked "names" should be a basic function, even if it means creating a new report function that is exactly like a profit and loss, but named something different.
I am so relieved to find this thread and know I am not alone in missing my detailed PL reports with donor names. phew.
I agree that the Name (Received from on the Deposit form) should show up on the P&L report regardless if there is a split or multiple lines on a transaction. Each line should be a data set - why wouldn't you be able to get a report with the Names? Doesn't make a lot of sense to have to enter the name again in the description field.
Welcome to the Community, BetweentheFences.
I can certainly understand how an ability to show customer names from deposits on profit and loss reports could be useful and have submitted a suggestion about it as of today.
You can also submit your own feature requests while signed in.

I have found a work around for this: Use a sales receipt to record the donation. It captures the name the same way as it does on an invoice and the customer name shows up on the reports. If only one check is being deposited, in the 'Deposit to' field, select the bank account. Or, if more than one check is being deposited, select 'Undeposited Funds' and then go to the deposit form and make the bulk deposit.
I have the same problem but the exact opposite. The name shows on P&L transaction report but not in the deposit detail. I don't know how to fix this!
Correcting what I just posted- I do have this exact same problem as you do in quickbooks online. I have the opposite in QB DT. I just took over my dad's business, which is a rental property with multiple tenants. I just migrated his QB DT into QB Online and suddenly find myself in this same predicament that you've described here. We don't send invoices either since our tenants just send us a check for us to deposit every month. Now, in QB online, I can't see these names anymore, when in QB DT the report listed these names! Has anyone been able to generate a report that shows the customer names? This is terrible. My data goes back multiple years and now I can't see any names in these reports anymore.
I’ll chime in on this thread to get you assisted, @emayritsch.
Let me share some guidelines to ensure that the customer’s name will show in the Deposit Detail report in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
To start with, you’ll want to ensure that the column is enabled on your report. This way, customers will be displayed when pulling up your report. Here’s how:
If the same thing happens, let’s perform some basic troubleshooting steps. First, let's clear the browser's cache. A stored cache can cause unexpected behavior while using the application. It’s also best to use supported browsers to have the most secure experience with QuickBooks.
In any instance that the names are still unavailable. I'd like to ask for some screenshots to get a better insight and figure this out instantly.
Moreover, you can utilize the memorize report feature in QBO. This way, you can save your previous customization. In case you will be pulling the format of the report.
Feel free to comment back if you have more concerns about customizing a report. I’m just a post away. Have a good one!
I have this same issue and had read these posts. It's been two years - any progress? This is just so frustrating!
Hi there, @katweyer.
I can see where you're coming from. Being unable to pull up a report with the data you need for a long time is inconvenient. I'm here to assist you to ensure we can resolve this issue quickly.
I've replicated the concern in this thread and verified that the customer's name appears on the Profit and Loss Detail report. It also shows on the Deposit Detail report as mentioned above. To support that, here are my screenshots:
Since it's been two years, can you share a screenshot of the report? Did you customize it? Are there any errors? Please know that I would appreciate any additional information as it will help me provide an accurate resolution.

I'll be on the lookout for your response. Rest assured that I'm eager to help you. Take care.
I'm running into the same problem of names not populating in the detail report.
We are a nonprofit, so the report is a Statement of Activities, not a Profit and Loss. We receive donations, not sales, and have donors, not customers.
I deposit multiple checks at one time, putting the donor name in the Received From column, expecting to later be able to sort by this name to see donor history. The Name column shows up empty even though all the data has been entered.
Entering donations as Sales Receipts, as suggested, would be an unnecessary extra step and would make matching bank transactions more tedious.
Interestingly, when there was an EFT deposit from a donor that downloaded directly into QB from the bank, that person's name shows up in the Name column.
This is a serious shortcoming of this online version. I am used to the desktop version which provides MUCH more versatility in how to enter and display information. I'm NOT happy and will probably go back to the desktop if there is not a workaround.
