When working with the Accountant's version of QuickBooks Desktop, does anyone know how to run a working trial balance that excludes inactive balance sheet accounts?
I have marked the box to exclude accounts without activity, but that only removes the income and expense items, not the balance sheet items.
The inactive balance sheet accounts can't be deleted since they have historical transactions in previous years.
thanks!
Hello there, @KristiP1.
You can customize your Trial Balance report so it will only show the active accounts. I can guide you on how to do it.
Once completed, you can save the customization you've created for future use. You can read through this article for more detailed steps: Create, access, and modify memorized reports
Lastly, I've added these articles to help you manage your balance sheet and chart of accounts:

Thanks for your input, but I was aware on how to customize the report.
I am referring to the Working Trial Balance that is accessed through the Accountant menu in QuickBooks Accountant Desktop. When you are in that screen you are unable to exclude the Balance Sheet accounts that do not have any balances. You do get an option to exclude the income and expense items that do not have activity.
Good Morning @KristiP1,
Thanks for taking the time to respond and clarify. I did some checking and there isn’t a way to exclude balance sheets with a zero balance from the working trial balance report at this time. I’d be happy to submit a feature request for you. It could be something that is added down the line.
Let me know if you have any other questions, or if I can help you in any way. I'm here and happy to do it.
Thanks @MonicaM3 ! Yes, please submit that as a feature request.
It's great to see you were able to relay your suggestion about the working balance here in the Community, KrisitP1. Many of the best product features have come directly from user feedback like yours.
Since MonicaM3 submitted this request, you can keep an eye out for the option to exclude balance sheets with a zero balance from the working trial balance report in your email, as well as the QuickBooks Blog.

I have not found a way to do this with the Working Trial Balance, but this is close:
If you go to the report section, under Accountant & Tax and Select "Adjusted Trial Balance" you can then customize this report as follows:
Under filters, select "Multiple Accounts", then in the pop-up window you will see a list of accounts, however this list will Only Be Active Accounts", so if you check All Accounts, it will only be All Active Accounts. Any account that has prior year activity, but not in the current year, I mark inactive. Running the account as described above will print a Trial Balance with only active accounts.
