Hello, as part of our close process, we reverse accrual journal entries in the prior month. We didn't have any problems with this process until this month. The closing date under the Accounting settings is 7/31/2024.
We're trying to reverse a journal entry booked in July and applying that reversal on 8/1/2024.
For some reason, we're getting a message that the books are closed and need to enter a password to override. We even noticed that upon first login, QBO allows us to reverse a JE with a date of 8/1/2024 but when we try to do another reversal for a different JE, it won't allow on the succeeding tries. Has anyone encountered this issue? Is this a bug in the system and what is the workaround? Thanks everyone for your time!
I'll share information about reversing Journal entries for a closed book in QuickBooks Online, @wendy113.
QuickBooks recognizes when the entry you are trying to reverse is a closed book. Thus, it will ask for a password set when closing your books.
The entry for August 1 worked since it is not affected by the closing date of July 31.

We are also experiencing this issue. We are unable to save reversing JE while having the prior period lock. Did you ever find a solution that did not involve creating the reversing JE manually?
Hello,
The issue is that the date IS set to a date that is not in a locked period but is getting blocked by the closed books settings. This does seem like a bug. Reversing JE is a very commonly used function between periods that are closed and not closed. Is there any work being done to resolve this issue?
I appreciate you joining this thread and letting us know about your concern with journal entries in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @ReversingJE.
Reversing a journal entry (JE) allows businesses to correct what has been mistakenly created or fix debit and credit errors. Also, applying these changes to a transaction that isn't under the locked or closed period is possible. Since you're unable to perform the following actions, can you tell me if you have encountered specific errors during the process? This is to determine the leading cause of the problem and provide fixes.
Other than that, we can also perform browser troubleshooting steps, as this behavior can be caused by too much cache stored on your computer. To start, we can access your company file using a private window and perform the reversing process in this setup. A private window is a helpful tool for troubleshooting browser-related difficulties as it won't preserve any history. The following are the keyboard shortcuts:
Once done, let’s give your browser a fresh start by clearing the cache or cookies to prevent this from happening again. If not, using one of the supported browsers can also be an option.
Furthermore, you can generate a journal report where you can view all entries created as JE. Aside from that, you can secure a copy of them by printing them from the application. You can refer to this article for complete guidelines: Print a journal entry report in QuickBooks Online.

I tried clearing my browsing data and also on a private window but still being asked for a password to post the reversal in an open period. I also tried on other browsers but still the same. I think this is a bug, didn't have this problem a month ago.

I have the same issue and no one seems to understand the problem. I talked to 3 customer support and they always say that the problem was that I was updating the original JE. I explained that I was reversing the original JE to an open period so it should not ask for a password. They suggested to just enter the password, but here are the issues. We are a team and I can't go to each one and enter the password whenever they need to reverse a JE and what's the difference now of a closed and open period if both ask for password.
This reversal function is really basic in any accounting software, and I do not understand why non-accounting engineers would change this function without consulting the actual users. QBO do better.
It's been a week now and still no response from QBO.
Hi there, @MarcP.
I completely understand how you feel regarding the reversal of journal entries in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and the password requirement you're encountering. This situation can be particularly challenging for teams needing seamless access to accounting functions.
It seems that you have already posted the same post twice on the QuickBooks Community page. While my colleague has already answered your post from another thread, I have reiterated my colleague's response below.
When reversing journal entries, encountering password prompts can disrupt workflow, especially for teams where multiple users need to handle this function without individual password entries.
Since you've already discussed this with customer support, I recommend contacting them again to escalate the issue. They have the right tools to investigate the root cause of the problem and provide you with updates about the status of the issue.
Moreover, you can also consider printing a journal entry report in QuickBooks Online.
