Sync With Paypal Vs Connect to Paypal. There are no mapping settings as the documentation suggests and I'm getting a lot of "Uncategorized Expense" items

Sync With Paypal Vs Connect to Paypal. There are no mapping settings as the documentation suggests and I'm getting a lot of "Uncategorized Expense" items which don't have enough data to process. I have to manually look these up on a downloaded transaction spreadsheet. Many are "Tax collected by Partner" from ebay sales transactions. Many are "Temporary Hold" transactions and some are even just plain old Amazon purchases with my Paypal Debit card. When I click "Settings" on the app, it just takes me to Paypal in banking are there is no advance mapping options.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, hhcdiesel.

QuickBooks assigns any expenses or checks that had no account entered into the Uncategorized Expense account. That’s why items are showing in that category.

To fix this, choose the correct category for these transactions. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Expenses menu on the left panel to choose the Expenses option.
  2. On the Expense Transactions page, choose the entry you’re working on.
  3. Then, click on the drop-down for Category to select the account you want to use.

If you’ll be using the same category, classify them by batch. The steps are simple and easy.

  1. Go to the Expenses menu on the left panel to choose the Expenses option.
  2. On the Expense Transactions page, choose the entry you’re working on.
  3. Mark the boxes of the expenses you'd like to classify and click the Batch Actions drop-down list.
  4. Tap the Categorize selected option and then choose the appropriate category.
  5. Once done, click Apply.

In regard to your other concern, the information received by QuickBooks Online is all dependent on what  PayPal shares with us. The mapping of transactions is based on the app’s settings.

To properly categorize these entries, I recommend you get in touch with PayPal’s customer service. One of their specialists can help configure the settings of the app and make sure transactions downloaded into QBO are classified to the correct account.

You can reach them by visiting this page and then go to the Contact section to see the phone number: Connect to PayPal.

Let me share the Connect to PayPal FAQ guide. It provides a breakdown of articles about the processes you can perform using the app. From there, you’ll see the complete list of features available in the product.

Reach out to me if you have any other concerns or clarifications. I’m always ready to answer them for you. Have a good one.

The app is made by and supported by Intuit, not Paypal.
When I manually download the account activity, the information on the transactions is clearly there.

"Tax Collected by Partner" for tax transactions.
"Temporary Holds" for Temporary Holds

These words don't appear in the transaction details provided by the app. There is no option for adding more, or less details in Paypal or QBO.

Further, in the FAQ you have provided it clearly states:

"How are holds/releases handled?

Temporary holds/releases are not imported."

Therefore the holds transactions should not be there. The links in those transactions in QBO go to a transaction not found page.

Either something got corrupted in our initial import, or there are major bugs here

Thank you for the additional details, hhcdiesel.

I can imagine the time you spent doing a manual review even when your app is connected. We will help you check your settings so that you can bypass this process and spend more time with your business.

With the sync option, you can modify the settings within the app or in QuickBooks. On the other hand, the connect to PayPal option will allow you to map your transactions on the Banking page. However, it's best if Support can look at your setup to assess it further and to find out why you got Holds, too.

You can reach them using these steps:

  1. Click on Help and choose Contact Us.
  2. Paste your question in the text box and click Let's talk.
  3. Choose between Message an agent or Get a callback. These options are available during their office hours.
