I wish I could make it better, @ciminskig.

I totally agree with you.  I can not ever get an answer to the questions that i am asking.  I get references to other issues that do not concern me.

I want to know how I can get a total when I search something such as checks written to a specific vendor.  All it gives me is the checks that have been written, why is there not a total amount at the bottom of the page?

I know a way to do this in QuickBooks Online, ciminskig.

We can run and customize the Transaction Detail by Account report to get the total of your check from a specific vendor. I'll guide you how.

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Type in Transaction Detail by Account in the search field, then click to open.
  3. Select Customize.
  4. Under the Report period, select the correct date.
  5. On the Rows/Columns, place a checkmark beside Vendor, Transaction Type, Balance, and Amount.
  6. You can also add other columns to appear in the report.
  7. On the Filter section, select Check on the Transaction Type drop-down menu.
  8. Select the vendor's name on the Vendor drop-down menu.
  9. Once done, click on Run report.

For your visual reference, I've attached a screenshot below.

Once done customizing, you can memorize the reports in QuickBooks. This helps you easily access them for future use.

We're always here to share our ideas with you if you have other questions or concerns. In case you have any, I suggest sharing them with us to further assist you.

I went to the Reports menu.  When I type Transaction Detail by Account into the search bar, it doesn't come up.

I want to help you resolve this issue as quickly as possible, @ciminskig.

The Transaction Detail by Account report is available in the Essential and Plus version of QuickBooks Online (QBO).

If you’re using one of those types of versions, you’ll be able to pull up the Transaction Detail by Account report. In your case, it seems that you’re experiencing unexpected behavior in QuickBooks.

To fix this, let's try logging into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser (incognito). There are times that the browser is full of frequently accessed page resources, causing some unusual responses.

Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox).
  • Control Option (Safari).

Once signed in, pull up the report again to double-check. If it works, return to your default browser and perform a clear cache. Every so often the cache becomes overwhelmed with older data which can potentially cause viewing and performance issues. Clearing it will refresh the system, and you'll be able to work with a clean slate. However, if the issue persists, try using other supported browsers.

You can also check out this article if you want to customize a report to show you the details you need: Customize a report.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you again. If you have any other QuickBooks questions, please feel free to add a comment below. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!

Ok, your second sentence answered my question.  I'm using Simple Start so apparently Account Detail by Transaction is not available to me.  I just assumed that when I searched different expenses, checks to a certain vendor, etc. that I could get a total amount at the bottom of the page.  Thanks for the help.
