When I enter a split expense, it's always out of balance. I enter +5 to one account and -5 to another, and it shows -10, not letting me save. Broken for almost a year!

I'm here to help you enter split expense transactions, michael126.

You can enter positive amounts instead of entering the other split as negative, this way it'll equate to the total expense amount. I'll show you how to split a transaction:

  1. Go to the Banking or Transactions menu and select Banking
  2. Click the bank account.
  3. Select the Expense transaction, and click Split
  4. In the Split Transaction window, select the expense Category and enter the amount as positive. Do the same thing for the second expense account.
  5. The Difference should show as zero for you to Save and add

Here are some references that you can check out when handling bank downloaded transactions: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

This is in the QuickBooks app for Android. Entering both as positive still ends up with a negative total.

I realized I can add a 10 as the total expense at the top instead of leaving it at 0 like it used to be (supposed to be) and that seems to work with a +5 and -5, or both +5

This is for the Android app. Adding an expense with both as positive 5 still ends up with a -10 balance. I just realized I can add a 10 as the total at the top, which makes it in balance, but it should add up as 0 instead of 10 when you have +5 and -5 in accounts.

Thank you for sharing the steps you've performed to resolve your concern about entering a split expense transaction using your QuickBooks Online (QBO) app, @michael126. Please know this is a great help to other users who are experiencing the same.

You can monitor your expenses through the QBO Android app by pulling up your financial reports. There are two available reports using the app, its the Profit & Loss and Balance sheet. Kindly refer to these articles below for the step-by-step guide:

I'm also adding this article to help you effectively manage your business using QuickBooks: Help articles for QuickBooks Online. It contains topics about banking and bank feeds, income and expenses, and reports and accounting.

Please let me know if you have other concerns. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

This isn't really a resolution, it's more of a bug that needs fixing. It used to be that I could set the total for the transaction as 0 at the top, then put +5 in one account and -5 in the other when doing the split. They both balance out and I get 0 at the bottom too. If I have multiple splits, I could have +5 in the first, -2 in second and -3 inthird, and they would still balance to 0. That's how it used to work. But then an update broke that, so to make it work I have to do this roundabout way thing of adding all the positive and negative entries as if they were positive. I hope this gets fixed soon.
